The next couple of weeks are going to be really crazy for me, mostly because I have two conferences to attend, and two books to rewrite.
This week is Conestoga, in Tulsa. (I’ll be posting my schedule here tomorrow, but it should go up on my website today.) I’m really excited about this one, because the powers-that-be there have offered Fangs, Fur, & Fey our own programming track. I’ll be appearing on three FFF panels, and one Conestoga panel (I think), and the FFF panels are going to be recorded and later shown online for those who couldn’t make it to the conference.
Which means I’ll be panicking shortly before each panel, because I’m not incredibly comfortable appearing on camera. That whole thing about the camera adding 10 pounds. And taking away IQ points. I swear that happens. ;-)
But I am looking forward to seeing many of my FFF friends again, and meeting even more for the first time. And taking lots of pictures.
Then next week I’ll be in San Francisco for RWA National. More about that next week...
During all of this, I have to do two more drafts of MY SOUL TO SAVE. I’m starting the first one today, and will do the second one as the chapters come back from Rinda, and her teenage daughter, who has kindly offered to give me a teenager’s perspective on my second YA.
I also have to do a large—okay, massive—revision on Prey. This one will be a lot of work, but after talking to my editor, we’ve decided that certain elements of the stand-alone plot arc aren’t working, though the book fits very well into the series arc. I’ve come up with a fix for the stand-alone plot arc and my editor just approved it literally minutes ago. And I’m very excited about it! Which is good. In my experience, things I’m not excited about are very difficult to write, while things I am excited about seem to practically write themselves.
I have a month to turn in the polished version of MY SOUL TO SAVE, then another month to rewrite Prey.
I’m gonna miss sleep.
But let’s not forget what you’ve all checked in for: this week's summer drawing! The winner get to pick one title from the following list of books, all but one of which are signed. (By the authors. Not by me. ;-))
The books:
Happy Hour of the Damnedby Mark Henry- Shadows on the Soul by Jenna Black
- Ashes to Ashes by Jennifer Armintrout
- Dark Lies by Vivi Anna
- Scions: Insurrection by Patrice Michelle
- Dancing with Werewolves by Carole Nelson Douglas (not signed)
The details:

- One entry per person, please
- You must sign your entry if you don't have a Blogger account. But do NOT leave your email address in the comment. That's a great way to get spammed.

I've read about 20, I say about because some I've read I wouldn't say they are UF. :)
I am actually keeping a running list on my LJ. I have read 47 books so far this year. I am not sure how many would be considered UF but I guess more than half.
Childlight
I've read 15 urban fantasy books this year so far.
You'll do fine on the panels. No camera can take away beauty and intelligence. :)
I have read approx. 27 UF this year. It's been a good year!
25 according to LibraryThing. That might be a slight undercount if I've reread any from previous years, but it's a good bet it's right.
It's a bit harder to be sure how many books in total (I know I've reread all of Steven Erikson's books for example), but I make it about 100 books in total so far this year.
My "To Read" pile also has 4 UF books on it.
Hmmm... I've read 47 books so far this year (but I'm reading like 6 right now), but only about 7 or 8 that I think would count as Urban fantasy. I've been on a historical/AU fantasy kick lately, so not too much UF.
WOw, that was not fun!
At my count it's between 15 and 20 UF... I read mostly Romance, so they are either PNR, UFR, or DUFR... so I had to figure out whichones fell there...um... My book count for the YEAR is 110, plus my TBR UFR-is well over 50, same with PNR-around 50. I've got books to last me the rest of the year and then still get more!! YEAH!
30 exactly. Until I finish unpacking everything at my new place and have time to read again. :)
I am going to guess about 50. That includes re-reading ALL of Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita and Merry.
Tasha A.
I think I counted about 17 urban fantasy for this year. I might have forgotten a few.
ive read about 30 of those, but like 200 books, so some more of them could be fanasty ,

I've only read 24 Urban Fantasy novels this year. Half of my overall reading is dedicated to it.
Thanks!
~ Popin
I feel like a lightweight. I've only read 6 books this year, all Urban Fantasy.
I have read about 28 books that I would consider UF so far this year! Mmmm...books :)
-Poppy A.
This year, I've only been able to read five adult UF. I'm in school full-time and most of my reading is YA for my job. As for YA UF, I've read another five :P
(I love cataloguing my reads on goodreads.com :P)
Well, this has been a slow year for me as I've only read 32 books so far. And of those only 3 were urban fantasy books. Not a very good # I know but I have several that I do want to get read before the year is over. I am going to start Jennifer Armintrout's 'The Turning' tonight!!
Rachel you are going to be one busy lady. Good luck with everything!
Strictly UF I have read 11 this year. :)
Hope you have a great time with all your "stuff." You are quite a busy gal!
Wow, I'm I starting to feel like an under achiever!!! I've only read 14 urban fantasies this year. I have this really bad tendency to re-read novels that I really enjoy, especially if they are books in a series.
I WANNA SAY I READ 7 OR 8. NOT REALLY SURE OF THE TECHNICAL NAMES FOR THE GENRES OF THEM THOUGH. THOUGHT LOOKING AT ALL THE POSTS FROM THE OTHER PEOPLE ON HERE, I THINK I NEED TO EXPAND MY LIBRARY, I FEEL A LITTLE BEHIND.
KATHLEEN WELSH
Lord, I have enough problems trying to fit things into genres on my bookshelves :) Defining it at it's most broadest, I'd say 42 books this year so far. And 15 in the past two weeks! (Yay for vacations with nothing to do but read!)
-Mel, aka sea0tter12
I think you'll do fine on the panels. I'm thrilled they will be available online.
Out of the 37 fiction books I've read this year, 20 were Urban Fantasy. I've also read 10 non fiction books. Obviously, I don't enjoy those as much...
I am coming up with a total in the mid 40s, approximately 47. Though some are called 'paranormal romance', so those might not be fully true to the "urban fantasy" genre.
I started a book diary in my LJ in June and in that I have read 9 books. I am currently in the middle of book 10.
CG
I have read 52 books so far with plenty to go.
I really love this year's crop of urban fantasy stories, and have probably read about 22 so far.
I'd say about 16 UF and another 30 or so fantasy and sci-fi books. I don't get to read as much as I really would like to.
-Jeffrey
I've read quite a few books this year so far, but only 6 are UF including the one I'm reading now.
I'm thinking like 50.. Maybe a little less. See I read a lot of UF when I was getting ready to go to RT this past April (I called it studying).
-Kirby
I think I've read about 11 or 12 urban fantasy books this year, but that doesn't include the ones I've re-read.
Oh, dear gods - I have no idea. A rough estimate would be about 25 or 30...but I really have no idea.
Sam B
I've read 13 UF books so far this year - nice number! :)
I have read 47 UF books so far this year *whew*
I think I've read about 13, a couple are questionable as to whether they really fit the urban fantasy tag.
Wow, let's see... I have read about 40 books so far & 22 were UF and have about 15 more in my "To Read" shelf.
Urban Fantasy is all I'm reading right now and I'm up to 83 books for the year. Well, 82 of them are UF, one novel was written by a friend of my husband's. I have a list if you want to see it. Wait, does UF mean anything paranormal fantasy, like paranormal romance? Well, I've read 82 paranormal romance/urban fantasy novels, but seriously, they all blend together for me half the time. :)
I've read about 19 UF books so far and have several more on my shelf I'm dying to read.
-Lina
books this year.... over 100
about 25 of them for college work though :p
Caitlin HAlliwell
I'm looking at 30 so far this year. I just can't wait until next month when all the new releases start rolling...it's been a looonnggg month with no new books.
Regina Brookman
Oh, ummm, about 30 this year, mind you I've been reading a lot more sci fi and straight detective/murder mystries this year.
Penny W.
Hm... Maybe like 30 or so for UF. I think. Hopefully, I'll find more to read before the year is out.
About 30, but thats not including the YA's and romance.
I've read about 10-15 this year.
-Kara H.
not sure how many i've read ths year so far but I like them so I'd say there were a lot lol. I wish I could go to this conference. But am hoping ot go to Dragoncon in Sept but we'll see.
44. Email me and I can send you a list ;-)
Have a lovely day! :-)
I've read about 12 urban fantasy books so far this year and am currently reading 2 along with about 13 other books :)
18 - though I'm having the same problem as some others not knowing if my personal definition of Urban fantasy matches up w/ the "official" one (if there is such a thing)
Rose W.
I've read one urban fantasy and four paranormal romances. I would like to read more, but they're all I have access to.
So my guess is 75 plus or so....I read about 4-6 books a week and I really can't keep track. and there is most likely some re-reads in there. Like the books by LJ Smith..after someone mention it here a couple of weeks ago I HAD to go read them again.=)
GracieA
I've read 32 so far and still counting!
Thanks,
Terri W.
Uhh... I think at least 20-30 urban fantasy books... I totally lose track, though, but that's my best guess...
=)
SarBrook
I've read at least 30 uf novels, or at least new ones. I reread alot, so it easily 3-4 times that, plus the other books I read.
Thanks!!!!
Hmm. A solid definition of Urban Fantasy would help my listmaking here - gets a little muddy from time to time - I'll go for the one that leaves out paranormal suspense and 'contemporary fantasy' (boy can it get confusing!): 32 UF since the end of April (I was writing a non-fiction book before then and didn't allow myself any unnecessary reading so I'd hit my deadline - been trying to make up for it ever since!)
Good luck with the panels. I have no doubt you'll have a blast (and look great while you're at it.) Luckily you can always call on your inner werecat for back-up, should you ever need her!
Cheerfully,
InkGypsy
I've read 52 so far. Ofcourse some of those I have read before.
Cyndi
Um...I'm guessing somewhere in the 15-20 mark, but I don't know. I don't keep tallies of these things. I'd rather read more books than keep scores :-)
I've read about 10 UF this year.
I've read probably about 16. Some of the books I read were not urban fantasy. So 16 sounds about right.
Count me in for this one, Rachel!
Ok... books that are considered UF, about fifteen, but i might have missed a few here and there. Sometimes, I'm not sure what would count;P
38 and counting!
I would have read more if school hadn't sucked my time away. Well, it IS the summer afterall...
*grins*
i have read @ 50 books this year and 15 have been uf
So far, I've read about 35-40. I read about a book a week ( sometimes 2) and most of the time I read at least two books at once. All I ever read these days are Urban Fantasies, lol. Right now I'm reading Kresley Cole's newest and Ink Exchange. Can't wait for Pride!!!
I think I've read about 13 Urban Fantasy books this year, and a lot more strict fantasy.
Thanks
A. Soyez
iv'e read 9 urban fantasy books this year. iv'e read more books, but there mostly romance =)
michelle
I don't keep a list but I would guess six or seven.
I've read 36 books so far this year, with about 15 being UF!
I've read about fifteen urban fantasy novels this year. Good luck on your panels!
I've read 38 books this year, with about 30 being Urban Fantasy!
:)
abreeskye
PS..I wish you were going to dragon*con this year!
Oh boy...I usually read about 3-5 books a week so that would be over 100 books so far this year. Even those not all of those are UF, they are paranormal or sci-fi.
I tend to reread a series when the newest one comes out so the count includes rereads of several UF authors.
-Heather R in Charlotte
Thanks to B3 (bittenbybooks.com) I'm up over 30. The joys of being a reviewer :)
I'm at 74 books read so far this year. 22 of them UF. I think I'm having a great reading year. :)
I've read about 5, or maybe 6?
I can say I really don't know!
Andi
It would be between 20 and 30 I think. Urban fantasy is pretty much all I've read this year!
Hi Rachel,
I have read 27 UF books just since I got home from RT. I know this because I am lazy and have them stacked up in 3 piles in my office instead of shelved neatly in the new shelving units that my husband hasn't put together yet because he hasn't painted the room they are going in. No procrastination going on at my house...
Have fun at Conestoga. You'll be great on the panels...I've seen you in action, you don't come across as nervous....you'll be fine. :-)
Debi Murray
I would have to say prbably about 10 fantasy- only because the other 20 were romance, suspense, and the likes.
Jenne Dehm.
I've read about 20 this year, give or take a few. It's just been a really good year for Urban Fantasy. :0)
An estimate - 100, as I read about 15 books a month. 70% of it SF or paranormal. :)
I think I've read about 25 urban fantasy books this year!
Kate S
Hmm,as an estimate I am gonna go for about 50. I try to average about 2 books a week, but sometimes life happens so I don't always get to read that much!!
All books so far this year have been UF except for Shirley Rosseau Murphy's Joe Grey Cat Detective series.
Around 35 so far--lots of new authors.
At last count, I've read 89 books so far this year and counting. I'm trying to break my record of 169 books from last year.
Of that 89, 27 are urban fantasy. So I'm doing pretty well so far I think. LOL
I don't really know. I read an average of a book a day, and we're a bit more than halfway through the year, so that's around 200 books read so far. Of those, I'd say that maybe 1/3 to 1/2 were UF/PR. So 65 to 100?
(I really need to start keeping good lists. The Visual Bookshelf on facebook is nice, but I'm not adding all the books I'm actually reading.)
hummm not sure how many - read about a book a week with the majority being urban fantasy...so maybe 25+ books thus far.
I keep track of my books on a monthly basis. I've read about 70 books so far this year. Proably half are Urban Fantasy. I primarily read anything paranormal or urban fantasy and some sci fi.
Heather
So far this year I've read 124 books. In college to get through all of the reading I took a speed reading course, it really helps. Lisa
I've read about 20 urban fantasy.
Michaelyn
i have read a ton of books this year, i was surprised when i counted.
16 have been UF
btw, i used to be lori from plainwell but i moved
I have read about 23 I think, some books that I have checked out are just listed as fantasy but have the Urbanness to it.
Ally
I am not sure how many books I have read this year...every year I think that I am going to keep track and then I forget. I would think that about half of what I have read is urban fantasy...it is quickly becoming one of my favorite genres!
Have a great time on your travels!
I may have forgotten a few, but it's at least 20, and that includes the two I'm reading right now as well as the books I've already read but decided to re-read.
Jen Jensen
I have read 25 and counting. :)
UF is still new to me. I am reading a lot of stuff that has been out for years, but I am enjoying it!!
Angela K220
9 fully read and reading the tenth. They would have been 20, but I like to add diversity to what I read. Compared to people I am a snail. Hah!
First of all God bless Excel, or there'd be no way to keep up with all the books! I'm currently at 41 urban fantasy!
I've read about 70 Urban Fantasy books this year.
Kaitlyn Vega
Being a teacher and having the summer off, I have been reading quick a bit. In terms of urban fantasy, I would say that I have read about 25 this year.
Heather (from Indiana)
aka TEACH
Ok maybe slightly pathetic but I read about 25 books a month all in the urban fantasy or paranormal group so I guess for the year it would be about 175... I really need a life
So far this year I have read 40 UF books.
I believe I'm up to 30 now.
