[A brief note before we get to the giveaway: I am now almost done with MY SOUL TO SAVE. So close, in fact, that I anticipate several more days of fevered scribbling--or rather, clacking--then a brief rest before I start polishing. Now, on to the giveaway...!]
As I said a couple of times last week, this week’s summer signed book giveaway is pretty special. In a couple of weeks, Jocelynn Drake will be celebrating her very first release, Nightwalker.
Jocelynn is a good friend of mine, and often my conference roommate. We’ve known each other since 2005, about a year after I started writing, and we really started out on the road to publication together. And I could not be happier for this chance to give away an ARC of her debut novel.
I read an earlier version of Nightwalker a couple of years ago, and loved it, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the published version. And here’s your chance to beat me to the punch!
You qualify to enter if:
- You’re not related to either me or Jocelynn
- You have not already received an ARC of Nightwalker, or read it through some other means.
- To enter, leave a comment in the comment section of this post, telling me what your favorite urban fantasy creature is. (vampires, shifters, witches, fae, demons, etc…)
- One entry per person, please
- You must sign your entry if you don't have a Blogger account. But do NOT leave your email address in the comment. That's a great way to get spammed.
- Entries must be received before 11:59 pm (central) on Thursday, July 17, 2008. The winner will be announced the following day.
ETA: If you've already preordered Nightwalker, you still qualify for the giveaway. Though I would encourage you to give away your ordered copy to a fellow reader when it arrives, to create one more Dark Days fan!

At the moment, I enjoy Faeries and Vampires. Although Were's are pretty cool too. Hmm...do I have to chose just one??
Natasha Armstrong?
Vampires are my Favorite. Always have been and will probably always will be. But I still love to read anything paranormal.
Oooh oooh! I wanna win. :) My favorite creature is vampires, but I love 'em all.
Terri Clark
Fairies and witches top the list but I love anything paranormal.
I started out being a strict vamp fan, but the shifters have grown on me. I really can't say which one I'd choose over the other.
I'm not too picky, but lately its been weres of any kind.
Only one favourite?
To be honest, it depends on the author, I think different authors have different "strong" urban fantasy figures and that makes a difference.
In terms of length of association, I guess it's got to be vampires for me, but there are people who write excellent faeries, witches, shifters of various types, half-demons, necromancers and so on and in the right hands I can love 'em all.
Vampires used to be my favorites. Then I started reading a lot more books with Weres of all kinds in them. I really enjoy the emotions and nature that Weres bring out. :D
hmm I think I'd have to say my favourite creatures are vampires...though of course my answer will probably change with the next paranormal book i read.
Emily H
I like vampires, witches, faries but i loooooovvvvvvveeeeee them all
Hard decision...
I think shifters are my unconscious favorites, because they show up all the time in my work, but I'm very fond of vampires and faeries as well.
This looks like a very cool book!
Man, I have a hard time picking a favorite supernatural creature - I'm thinking witches as written by Kim Harrison and Kelley Armstrong would probably top my list followed by vamps & shifters.
Angela D.
It was always vampires for me, but more recently I've started falling for the fae, too.
Shapeshifters! Definitely. Witches too...
Vampires are my number one favorite and shifters run a close second!
Poppy Arakelian
Please don't consider me for the contest; I've already pre-ordered Nightwalker.
But I had to chime in and say my favorite urban fantasy creatures are vampires, with werecats being a close second (weres are second in general, but werecats edge them out).
I have this soft spot for vampires, but my all time favorite character has to be the Phouka in Emma Bull's War for the Oaks ;)
I think my favourite UF creature is a shifter because I've yet to see a vampire written convincingly. So let's see if NIGHTWALKER can do it :P
I would say that my favorites would have to be weres---with a tie between werewolves and werecats
I love Carrie Vaughn's Kitty Norville and of course Rachel Vincent's Faythe Sanders. With a close second and third of Vamps followed by witches.
Vampires would have to by my favorite, but witches and weres are at the top of my list too.
What a difficult question...
A good author can turn an iffy into a favorite anyday. I love ghosts, but not sure if that is more paranormal than outright UF. I do heart me some hairy, shifting creatures, though. Probably because I love animals
Regardless, I'm really excited about J's release. Will definitely be buying a copy.
Can I say my favorite is all of them? I'm just loving all the paranormal beings: vampires, shifters, fae, demons, angels, witches, and all the rest.
If I had to pick just one upon threats of death, it would have to be, umm... fae, I guess. How about a vampire-shifter-fae mixed breed? LOL
I guess it depends upon my mood! Right now I just finished the two "Fever" books from Karen Moning - which is Fae oriented and really liked them...(my 1st Fae oriented!). LOVE vampires (BONES!!) LOVE werewolves (Charles from Patricia Briggs!) and Shapeshifters (you know who!).
I pre-ordered but would LOVE a signed copy :)
Kim Vargo
I absolutely love paranormal books and started out with enjoying stories of vampires. I still like my vampire books, but have developed a love for the shapeshifters, especially, wolves, big cats and dragons...awesome. Novels on immortals, witches, and those with unique abilities are also part of my wonderful reading library. A well-written book is a pleasure to read no matter which paranormal genre the author gives the reader...my imagination embraces them all. 'Nightwalker' sounds like a book I definitely want to read and will enjoy. Congratulations on your first release, Jocelyn!!!
I would have to say that Vampires are one of my favouries.
Although I find Weres are usually very interesting characters to read.
Annamarie
I'm going to say shifters, because that covers a whole host of creatures, and most of my favorites tend to fall into that category. Of course there are so many cool creatures in Urban Fantasy that narrowing it down even that much was difficult ;)
It is so hard to choose just one because each of them brings something different to the table. If I have to choose just one fantasy creature, I pick the Valkyrie. They are strong, butt-kicking women. :)
Michelle Greathouse
Considering that I am a wolf in spirit...
Shapeshifters, especially werewolves.
I'm thealphawolf on LJ.
This is a tough question. Each creature has their own unique qualities, regardless of who is writing them. Most shifters tends to be very emotional and protective - love that. Vampires are generally the romantic bad boys - yum. I fell in love with warlocks when I read Linda Lael Miller's vampire series and was introduced to Dathan. I really don't think I could chose just one. It depends on my mood which one I want - vampire, shifter, or magic user.
Jackie (Literary Escapism)
Hm. Lately it seems like I've been reading more werewolf/cat books, so I'll go with that as my favorite (ever so slightly edging out vampires) -- but I'm not picky, I'll read anything!
-Mel, aka sea0tter12
Wow, I've always been a vampire lover. Right now I'm into Witches for reading and shifters and fae for writing. I can't get enough of them, any of them... I guess that's why I read so much.
Congratz on the Book!!!! Best wishes on finishing ASAP!
I'm really enjoying demons right now, but Fae and Were run close behind!
my favorite is Dragons although weres and vamps come a close second. Anything in this fantasy type genre is great though
I started out on vamps, and I still love them, but weres have really scratched out a place in my heart too!
I'm flexible, though I'm a little off vampires at the moment for some reason.
I think my current favorite would be demons--check out Larissa Ione's Demonica or Jackie Kessler's Hell on Earth series.
I have always, and will always, love vampires. They are beautiful and intriguing creatures!!!
Ever since I was small, I have always enjoyed them. I write, watch and read about them.
I wish I could live forever and see how the world changes as the centuries fly by.
Rachel, count me in for this contest. I'd love to read this book!
Vampires have always been my absolute favorite but the more urban fantasy novels I read it varies.
I really struggle to list a favourite because I like so many different authors who deal with various urban fantasy creatures. I have enjoyed various were-creatures, vampires, shifters, the fae, necromancers etc. and I seem to enjoy them all. I don't know if I can actually pick a "favouite".
But in homage to the author who got me hooked on this genre of reading I will just say the fae.
I love reading almost all the different creatures, but I think that vampires are #1 on my unwritten list. But truly, I love 'em all!
My favorite is actually a toss up between two: Vampires and Shapeshifters (esspecially werewolves). LOL Though I think I like most of the "super-natural" type things in general
CGinCA
I love were's of all sorts. My favoite are selkies (people who shift into seals) but there aren't a lot of books about them. Maybe one day I'll change that :)
~Jamie Lynn
I'd have to say that my favourite urban fantasy creature is the classic vampire. You can never go wrong with the vamp. Despite how old the vampire lore is, you can always make vampires seem fresh.
Thanks
~ Popin
Right now I love vampires. Even when I was a little girl I loved vampires. The idea of a magically enhanced human or creature just appeals to me I guess:)
-Kim Griswold
I like weres, having a human and an animal side is very interesting.
Although I draw the line at wererats, or any type of insect. Yuck!
My favorite urban creature, as of right now, is the Valkryie - especially Kresley Cole's version of them. They're kick-ass, take no prisoners females. :D
Vampires are my favorite, I mean what's not to like, they cane stay up all night and then you don't have to cook the breakfast.
I LOVE READING BOOKS BY UP AND COMING AUTHORS! I READ THE INFO ON AMAZON ABOUT IT. SOUNDS INTERESTING.
KATHLEEN WELSH
Hmmmmm.... vamp, witch, or were....
they are all very good, though it depends on how the author portrays them.
Caitlin Halliwell
I enjoy vampires (though I think I've gotten a little overkill on them lately), and have really been enjoying some were/changeling stuff, also. That said... my heart belongs to the fae.
I can't really say I have a fav creature. It depends on the story and what the creature's character is like. I like a creature with a sense of humor. I do like the Companions of The Heralds of Valdamar by Mercedes Lackey
Childlight
Hard question.
My favorite would have to be...*Drum roll please*... shifters! But vamps have a special place in my heart too. Witches and Elves are tied for third. And Demons in Fourth. I pretty much love all paranormal creatures, big or small. Anything that goes bump in the night works for me.
~~Sara H.~~
I'm a huge fan of shifters and were creatures. Ever since I read animorphs as a kid!
~Stephanie Brent
My favorites are the shifters and vamps come in second place.
-Kirby K.
Demons, oh also like vampires and werepanthers and wereleopards (panther is my all time fav animal). Sorry, cannot pick one of them :-)
Penny W.
I think Faeries are going to be the new big thing and that's what I'm enjoying most these days.
Anedella
I love readin about vampiers. and other things that go bump in the night so i cant whate to read this one.
Dragons. You know, the kind that shapeshift into hot men. lol.
I really enjoy most shapeshifter books whether romance or UF. But, yeah, I'm pretty much like everyone else on the list. Vamps, weres, witches, oh my! I'll read it all. And of course Fae, too. I am apparently not very committed to any one specific type.
Jamie Lynn - there are some selkies (a small part) in C E Murphy's Negotiator Trilogy. Oh, and gargoyles... yum. And did I mention dragons? I love these books.
I have to say my favorite would be wizards. One particular wizard, as a matter of fact. ;)
But really, I rather like the idea of an everyman, thrown into a world of craziness. Nothing like rooting for the underdog.
I started reading books long before the paranormal novels, and first bit I could get was about magick. Second, were the old stories about vampires - the scary kind of fairy-tales. Besides my own country folklore is full of vampires. I love them to bits :). One of my favourites are The Dark Carpathians created by C.Feehan. But it really depends on authors - all magical creatures are welcome in my house. Certainly, shifters from Ilona Andrews and Patricia Briggs books make my heart beat faster..
Well, I love all creatures but my first fav has always been vampires!! But I also love shifters so the two of these are neck in neck for me.
Jocelynn Drake's book sounds wonderful and I was planning on getting it when it comes out! So this contest is absolutely awesome!!
Shapeshifters definitely, although i enjoy reading all types. My favorite is when an author can take something "everyone" already knows about and come at it from a different angle or slant.
Rose W.
It has always been vampires....but I've recently fallen in love with shape shifter characters.
vampire. but i started to like the werewolf, and were cats of rachels
tasha t
gypsywitch36@yahoo.com
Vampires rule. Well, they rule the night. But if someone will come up with a good were-monkey I'm onboard.
i love vampires, were's, and really anything i think might be cool to read about
michelle c
I've always appreciated witches. I like Vampires as well though!
~A. Soyez
Zombies are my favourites ;-)
Have a lovely day! :-)
I like witches and shifters the best.
Toss up between weres and vampires.
Shifters are my favorite, hands down. The duality of human/animal creates an interesting mix of desires and hang-ups that fascinate me.
Vamps are my faves.
Vamps are my favorite with demons a close second. Then weres/shifters of all types.
I have a thing for werewolves like Keri Arthur's series. :)
My favorite urban fantasy creatures would be witches. I've always thought having nifty magical powers or abilities would be fun and useful. Oh and pixies too, but only because of Jenks from Kim Harrison's series :)
Demons!
Although, really, best creatures ever are Steven Moffat's Weeping Angels.
I really like the all but a good witch book really is perfect for me.
I would have to say witches are closer to the top.
HI RACHEL I'D HAVE TO SAY VAMPIRES! IM LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR STORY IN THE MAMMOTH BOOK OF VAMPIRES,THANKS KAI.
Vampires are my favorite, but werewolves are a really close second.
Nightwalker looks amazing and I have been salivating over it since I first saw it mentioned on your site.
Congrats on being so close to being done with My Soul To Save...this is already on my must buy list and it has not even gone throug the polishing stage.
Keeping my fingers crossed!
Totally vampires, though shape-shifters are a close second, witches are a far third, and somewhere in there, at like 2.5, are necromancers...
=)
Hi Rachel,
I would love to read your friends first book. It sounds wonderful.
Kristy Jo
My favorites are vampires but my genre to read is anything Paranormal. Looking forward to the interview this week!
Sign me up! I would love to win!
Gotta be the weres and shifters for me. Wolves and Big Cats (of course!)
I love them all! Even better when we get several of them in one book. I especially love books with the Fae, demons/hunters, shapeshifters of any kind of animal.
I think my favorite is probably shifters, whether they be along the werewolves - or better yet, werecat! - variety, or if they are humans that can just change their appearances and whatnot.
My fav is vamps, of course!
Do I really have to pick only one!? Okay, well it would be vampires for me with shape-shifters rating a very very close second.
Vampires are my favorite. I have always admired their power but felt for them...because immortality can't be all it's cracked up to be.
Crystal Lane
I used to have a hard time picking between vampires and weres/shifters. But slowly over the last few years, the weres/shifters have won out. They're my favorites. (Vampires are a close second though.)
Its got to be Shifters for me. All the way. Changing into an animal totally fascinates me. But of course throw in all the other paranormal being's and you have yourself a great read!!
Count me in to win PLEASE!!!
I love vampires and shifters(especially Dragons! )
Hugs, Danette
Werelions...
So sexy :)
Chiara
Shifters, shifters, shifters! I love anything to do with shifters but I do read all things paranormal.
really, they're all just so much fun to play with and if you're inventive enough, it's pretty easy to come up with some new concept to use to make them even more interesting. I've gotta say, though, that vampires were an early attraction of mine and will probably always be a favorite, but anything paranormal gets a brownie point or two in my book.
- Crash
Ah- a tough choice. I think that since I rescue wolf hybrids, a hybrid is my favorite character and the most common would be a dhampyre - half wolf/half vamp.
Of course, werecats rate up there with werewolves...
Looking forward to the new Nightwalker read!
I love shifters..something primeval about them. More real than vampires well as real as fantasy can be. Don't get me wrong I like vampire books but the duality of shifters makes more interesting reading to me. Fave? CT Adams/ Cathy Clamp
My favorite creature is the vampire... they are the coolest creature out there other than me!!! Thanks
Geoff
I really like werecats... ;)
Hard question. There isn't a creature I dislike, and in the right hands, each shines in their own way.
Nope...I really can't pick. It changes based on what I am reading, and what I am writing. ^_^
I lurve anything that has to do with shifters or were's. I'll take any kind of were. I mean, how cool would it be to just be like "well, today is a sucky day to be human, I think I'll just be a leopard."? I also have a weird fascination with fey. I love all of the rules and how they can trick you in so many ways without you knowing until it's too late. Though I would hate to be on the wrong side of unseelie humor, I've always seen myself being part of that court. However, given the choice to be either a faerie or a were, I'd choose were in a nanosecond.
I really go through cycles of what is my favorite, what I would choose to be, if that was an option. I like shifters and witches at the moment. Vamps were my first love in paranormal. The fae are always so wonderfully alien even though they resemble us. I like how they are tricky and you have to keep your wits about you when dealing with them.
I like werewolves, vampires, and shapeshifters.
Nightwalker! Sign me up. It sounds awesome.
I love them all. Hard to choose they're all so cool. But most favorite are shapeshifters, witches and vamps. And I love reading about new creatures and hybrids.
-Lina
I'd say vampires, but I think I'm suffering from vampire overload. Elves intrigue me. Many different directions to go with elves, and they haven't quite been beaten to death.
Favorite creature hands down: Vampires!
-Msparrow29
My favorite urban fantasy creatures are angels. its a very close second though between vampires & were's/shifters.
Elizabeth B.
angels, demons, and vampires
My favorites are definately weres. I love anything aggressive or animal ;)
Shifters... I love all urban fantasy but lately, shifters have taken the cake. I love that they are able to appear human but are so much more than that under the surface.
This is such a hard question!
If I HAD to chose, I think weres then vampires be top my list. Although V-Hunters. witches, and fae arent that far behind. Yes, its hard to choose. Lovin your blog btw.
nikki m.
Wow. Lots of entries!
Right now I have a huge soft spot for shapeshifters. But then I always seem to go back to my dear vampires. So its hard to say, all depends on what I am reading.
My favorite has gotta be vampires, but Were's come in a close second.
Regina Brookman
My favorite has to be Faeries. I have always held a fascination for anything paranormal but faerie lore and anything to do with faeries has always held my interest. any book dealing with faeries I usually try to read. Although vampires come in second then shape shifters as a third.
definately vampires
I love Witches and Faeries! :)
It used to be vampires; after one too many descriptions of the biting and the taste of blood, I opted for werewolves; reading about hunts and forests scents was a nice change.
...and then you read Keri Arthur's Riley series and you get a healthy helping of both. Best of two worlds. ^^
- Sam B
I love them all! But vampires have to be my favorite because they were my first love in this genre.
I think I'd have to say that shape-shifters are my favoirte. Always have been, really. There's just something about the human/animal combination that just does it for me.
Cortney K.
I love all of them but my favorite is vampires. I also love werewolves. Nightwalker sounds so awesome!
Right now its werewolves. I just got caught up with Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson series and am in love with werewolves.
Love all the crazy out of the world creatures. Really Want to win. Nightwalker seems to be a good book, can't wait to read it.
Yay!!!
Vampires are my favorites because I think they are sexy and mysterious.
Terri W.
Well, I love vampires and faeries. But then, you can't beat being able to shift into another animal! It's too hard to chose. I love anything paranormal really.
Kate S
Elves. They seem to be a cut above all the other races *grin*
Vamps are my all time favorite but shifters and fairies are right up there too. As long as the story is good, I'll read any paranormal.
-Heather R in Charlotte
Shifters are definitely my fav.
Werewolfs, werecats, wererats, etc you name it they rock.
Gotta go with the hot, sexy werewolves ;)
Oddly enough, I'd say demons. There is so much untapped potential in them as characters. You can either go the traditional evil beings bent on dragging you back to Hades angle, or the fallen angel with a bad rap angle--very multi-faceted. Two of my favorite fictional characters right now are demons, in fact--Jim from the Aisling Grey series and Al from the Rachel Morgan series.
Does that make me a bad person? : )
I am in!
MMMMM i love werewolfs and werepanthers!!!
Catherine mcS
I can not wait to start a new series and hopefully get another addiction.
Vampires are my favorite, though I wish that authors would be more original with them.
Hmmm, witches are always a hit, and weres are so alpha it makes me sweat! Thanks for the giveaway!
Currently I'm on a Shifters kick, but still like Vamp books too.
Weres are my favourite. But I still enjoy reading about other paranormal creatures.
Faeries are my top favorite, though after reading Stray I am starting to think werecats are pretty cool too! :-) Paranormal and fantasy have always been a close interest of mine.
Umm apologies if already posted.
LJ Smith settled the dispute a few years back for me with her characters Galen and Keller. -Shifters
This is such a hard question, Rachel. But I'm going to have to go with vampires.
Jen Jensen
At present, I'm kind of partial to vampires, although it is kind of new to me. i blame Twilight (great book, btw).
Wow, how to pick. I would have to say witches although I love them all. Vampires are almost as great a witches.
Kimberly G S
Oh, boy, Do I have to pick one? LOL
It's kind of a threeway tie with Fae, Vamp and Witches, but I enjoy them all, like most of us. :) Pretty close behind are Weres.
Paranormal books have been a favorite for a long time.
I've been partial to shifters, and coming in close second are vampires. Paranormal Fantasy is a fabulous genre.
Jenne Dehm.
I would have to pick the lovely and wicked fae to top my list. There are just so many different types to choose from :)
Jen Vegh
I like werewolves because they are dangerous, mysterious and sexy.
Hugssss
