Want YA?

[This contest has now closed. Check back soon for the next one.]

I leave for NY in three days, and I have nothing to wear. And no idea what to buy. And I'm behind on the rewrite of Shift.

So.. let's do something easy. Let's give away a book.

Up for grabs: one ARC of My Soul to Take.

About the book:
My Soul to Take is my Young Adult debut, and the first book in my Soul Screamers series. It comes out on August 1, 2009, in trade paperback format (the taller paperbacks, as often seen in YA).

The book is about a high school junior who suffers brutal panic attacks (and the uncontrollable need to scream) when she thinks someone near her is about to die. She thinks she's losing her mind--until she discovers the truth.

This is my re-imagining of the old Irish bean sidhe (banshee) lore. My attempt to explain what a bean sidhe is really doing when she wails over the dead. But don't open the book expecting women in black dresses trailing funeral processions and tearing at their clothes. Kaylee goes to a normal high school, has a normal job, and all the normal teenage problems. And, of course, she can predict death.

But the real question is, can she stop the deaths she foresees?

Interested? This giveaway is open to everyone. (Unless you're related to me or have already read the book.) All ages, and anywhere the post office will ship. (Later, I'll have a teen only giveaway.)

To enter, answer one of the following questions in the comments, before 11:59 pm on Saturday, May 30:
What's your favorite YA book, and why?

Or, if you haven't read YA before, why have you decided to try it now?

Other business: I'll be answering the questions left for me in previous posts today, so check back if you asked me something.

And... tomorrow I'll announce the winner of the early copy of Prey from the last giveaway.

Well I'm happy to say I just dove into YA recently. I did just read Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler and I absolutely loved it. I'm sad it took me forever to get into the genre but I know I'll find some fantastic authors. I recently bought a bunch of other YA novels so I'm looking forward to continuing.

I'm really excited about your Soul Screamers series and can't wait to get started. This would be an awesome win for me. But regardless, I'll be reading the series =)

Thanks so much for this giveaway,

mishtakes AT gmail DOT com

P.S. I'm really liking the redesign of your site =) Looks great!

my favorite YA is Kelley Armstrong's "Summoning" and "Awakening" (and i canNOT wait for third!)
Kelley is the person who got me into YA - i didn't realize that it was GOOD now - when i was a teen, it was all "Babysitters Club and "Sweet Valley High". it is now exciting!

(and i would TOTALLY adore an ARC of this book - i am awaking it even *more* eagerly than i am waiting for "The Reckoning!"

Great giveaway, Rachel!

What's your favorite YA book, and why?

That's difficult! There are so many amazing urban fantasy YA books around! I can name my favourites:

The Morganville Vampire series by Rachel Caine - They're just so exciting and believable. Each story just gets better, but without losing the exictment and suspence that was there in the first. Just awesome

I also love Melissa Marr's YA novels; I hadn't read about faeries before, but her stories are just so imaginative, and work so well, I can't put them down.

My favorite YA?? Hmm...let's see I LOVED Nancy Holder & Debbie Viguie's Wicked series. It was completely awesome! The newest book, after too many long yeared delay comes out a week after Prey!! YEA July! This book featured rival witch/sorcerer clans battling each other. Very good.

Another fave that I read over and over was Marianne Curely's Old Magic. More magic and stuff a girl with magical powers helps a boy who has hidden magical powers out, helps him destroy the curse that was put on his family years ago. Very very good.

I also read lots of other vampire YA, like L.J. Smith's Vampire Diaries. And oh, that YA list can go on and on. Here I thought I was done with YA years ago, but lately it has been getting really really good and going back to great supernatural topics!!!

Darn, I hate being the first post...makes me feel like I'm not going to win, even though it's random :p I like a lot of young adult books, I started to read the teen vampire stories first and then moved into paranormal romance. My favorite YA would have to be Uglies by Scott Westerfeld. The series makes you think about today's society and the lengths people go through to be beautiful. Although I'm sure that your YA will be my new favorite ;)

Ooo. Guess I'm not the first, Woohoo!

I fell in love with Suzanne Collins "Hunger Games" and was haunted by Susan Beth Pfeffer's "Life as we knew it", so I guess it's kind of a tie between the two.

Ashley

Ya is a great genre weather you are an adult or a young adult. One of my favorite books of recently has been If I stay and a few that are coming out this year that I am IN LOVE WITH are "Prophecy of the Sisters" and "Beautiful Creatures" amazing!?!

vandsmedia[at]gmail.com

My fave right now is the Richelle Mead series Vampire Academy. It is still YA but a very mature read. Def not boring and MAJOR cliff hangers..... LOL
I am sooooo looking forward to your series. If I can get it sooner rather than later even better.

You know I've been reading YA for quite some time now. I have a Neice who will be 15 this summer, and she loves to read as much as I do. She was wanting to read some of my books, but most just aren't something I would want her to be reading at this age. So I dove into the world of YA so that I would know what I should and shouln't suggest. Right now I am loving The House of Night. I'm going to cross my fingers that I win this one. It would be great for Kay's Bday that is coming up.

Good Luch in NY.

my favourite YA book at the moment is Evernight by Claudia Gray. it's got so many awesome twists and turns, nobody is who you expect them to be. utterly fantastic read. i loved it! <3

I don't want to sound too cliché, but my absolute all time favorite ya is the harry potter series. I started the first book around the time it came out when I was in elementary school, and read every single one after that as soon as it came out. It was just such an exciting and intense series. All those midnight release partys. Anxiously waiting In line to get that beautiful art work covered masterpiece.
And yes, I have two copies of all the books. I have a hardback set and a paperback set. However, I don't have book 7 in paperback, because it hasn't come out yet!

I only read one YA book and that was Kelley Armstrong's Darkest Powers. I picked the first book "The Summoning" a few months ago b/c the cover was interesting. (I picked up Stray b/c of the cover and now it's my favorite series :) :) "The Summoning"turned out to be a really good read and very exciting. I can't wait until the third book.

What's your favorite YA book, and why?
My favorite YA series is The Morganville Vampire Series by Rachel Caine. Her vampires are evil with there own agenda's, the characters are well written,I love Claire,Michael,Eve and Shane..they are close and stick up for each other. They're fast reads but are fantastic. They are not just for young adults.
blinky_35(at)hotmail(dot)com

THE GRAVEYARD BOOK, because it was apologetically Neil Gaiman and the best thing he's written in quite some time.

That's a hard one to answer... I'd have to say either Need by Carrie Jones, Graceling by Kristin Cashore, or anything by Tamora Pierce.

Need because Carrie Jones is an amazing writer and even though some of my "I think this is going to happen"s were correct I was still kept guessing to the very end.

Graceling because I was able to kinda relate with Katsa and any book that I can relate to the character has a way of pulling me in and keeping me there till the very end.

And Tamora Pierce's stuff is the easiest to read. Even though I read the The Immortals Quartet years ago, I still love to pick them up and read them again and again.

Oooh,I want this ARC!

My favourite YA book ... It's a toss up between Generation Dead by Daniel Waters and Uglies by Scott Westerfeld. (But I'm sure the Soul Screamers books will knock them off the top of my list!)

I've read several YA books, but I can't honestly say I have a favorite. I enjoyed the ones I read, but none really stand out. But there are several series I haven't tried yet but plan to, that I have heard great things on such as Morganville Vampire series by Rachel Caine, Kelley Armstrong's Darkest Power series and Melissa Marr's Wicked Lovely series.

Your book My Soul to Take really does catch my interests, and would love a chance to win it. I really like the cover! :)

What's your favorite YA book, and why?
I love to read and my preferred genre used to be Paranormal romance. Then a store clerk suggested a book that had fruit on the cover and that it was about some vampire that loved a clutzy girl and btw he sparkled. I was a bit skeptical about purchasing it, but i really enjoyed it and it made me look at YA in a different way. Soon I was knee deep in all these wonderful books, but I must say that my favorite read is THE HUNGER GAMES by Suzanne Collins.
OMG!! that book is A M A Z I N G!!! It is brutally beautiful and it totally sucks you in and leaves you holding your breath until the very last word is read. I am chomping at the bit for its sequel.

I am also drooling for the Soul Screamer series and I cannot wait to delve into this new world. Bring it on!! and thanks for the contest

One of my Favorite YA novel is actually a series called Everworld written by K.A. Applegate, but I love a lot of YA and it's an area that I'm I (as a writer) am trying to break into.

This is a hard one! I love so many YA books. One of the last books that I read and loved was The Last Olympian in The Percy Jackson Series by Rick Riordan. I love the way he incorporates mythology into the modern world of today.

What's your favorite YA book, and why?

The Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead and my favourite of the three out so far is easily the 3rd one, Shadow Kiss. I love the books because the world is so well created, you can really imagine what it's like. The characters are really well developed and the relationships between the protagonist Rose and those around her are so complex and interesting. The plot is really well thought out and the books really well written. I'm desperate for the next book to be out!

PS I'd love to win an early copy of My Soul To Take, I'm really looking forward to reading it :)

Hmmm, my favorite is probably is The Boyfriend League by Rachel Hawthorne. I absolutely adore her writing style and all the book I've read so far! Please enter me in the contest! thanks!

I have to choose just one? Hmmm...okay...I'm going to say The Hunger Games. But there are so many good ones. I look forward to reading yours! whitneym@gmail.com

I have a few... the twilight series, kelley armstrong's The Summoning, and Rachel Caine's Morganville Vampire series. I am currently reading the Nightworld books, and loving them!!

I have only recently started reading YA. I've of course read the Twilight series--it feels as if everyone has. I read The Forest of Hands and Teeth based on your recommendation, and I'm about to read The Fetch.

I enjoyed YA when I was in the target age, but once I got older, I moved toward sci-fi and fantasy. A friend got me into paranormal romance and urban fantasy, and that somehow led to YA. A good book is a good book, no matter what age group is was written for.

My favorite YA? That's too hard to choose from. It'll either be between the Twilight series, the Fade series, or the Darkest Powers series. :)

I have so many!! Um...My favorite overall YA book has to be Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson.

Why?-It was a story for young people dealing with a very adult subject. Meaning that the author put trust that we could handle it. And it tought me to learn to speak up for my own opinions and if there was a problem.

Ain't contests grand!

I haven't read tons of YA, but one of my favorites so far is the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead.

I have a few YAs on my TBR shelf right now, and I'm anxious to get to them!

My current favorite YA novel is Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy. I love and completely connect with her character Rose. I love her struggle to balance her love for both Dimitri and Lissa. I also love to see how independent she is becoming!

There's a lot of YA I really love, but Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy series probably tops my list of favorite YA published in the last 5 years or so.

Hi Rachel

I have to say right now my favorite YA is Lili St. Crow's Strange Angels ARC. It's very attention grabbing with the building of a new reality. Others that I have enjoyed are The House of Night Series by P.C. Cast + Kristin Cast, Blue Blood Series by Melissa De La Cruz and for something different, the Death By Series by Linda Gerber. I love YA, and when I finish, my daughter reads. She's sixteen and loves reading as much as I do. She introduced me to the Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer that we've read it though twice. Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling has to be included of course. The Dangerous Days of Daniel X by James Patterson was excellent as well.

YA that I'm eagerly anticipating are My Soul to Take by Rachel Vincent, Once Died, Twice Shy by Kim Harrison, Firespell by Chloe Neill to name but a few.

Dottie :)

I've read so many awesome YA books.

One of my favorites would have to be The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. I loved the dystopian world she created based on an old world culture you don't always see, I thought it was harsh and brutal but beatifully written. I ached for Katniss, for what she had to go through for the love of her family. The book was breathtaking.

I've also read and loved recently, The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan, Ink Exchange by Melissa Marr, The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary Pearson, and every Morgainville Vampire book by Rachel Caine.

My favorite YA book is Twilight. The reason being because it is first and foremost a love story, and all the drama and problems in it are because these two people love eachother against all odds.

Cyndi F.

My favorite YA is a series, not a single book. I've loved The Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper since I first read it 20 years ago. I re-read it at least once a year (usually more), and it makes me cry every time.

There are a lot of more recent YA books and series I also love--Melissa Marr's stuff, Rachel Caine's Morganville Vampires series, anything by Holly Black--but they'll never take the place of the Dark is Rising for me.

I'm torn between two. Shadow Kiss by Richelle Mead, and The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong.

Both series have fantastic world building, and great memorable characters. But, I think I'm going to have to go for The Awakening. I love Kelley's Otherworld series, and seeing that same world being incorporated into a YA setting, and working just as great is pretty impressive.

I enjoy finding YA that I can pass on to my niece. Reading it first helps me know that what she is reading is appropriate.

My absolute favourite YA novel is 'Tithe' by Holly Black. It's fantastic because even though it deals with mythological characters, the feelings are real and raw and relatable, and her grasp on the mythology is awesome, and the urban setting is so real you can almost taste it.

I love YA because it's about seeing the world new. The characters are old enough to be real people rather than charactatures, but you can still believe in the slip-through-the-cracks world the story inhabits. And there's a terrific immediacy that is oftn lacking from adult novels, and you can get incredibly sweet romances without the characters tumbling straight into bed.

It's so totally worth the scorn of some of my uni friends.

I can't wait to read your Soul Screamers books, they sound amazing. and if they're even half as good as the Shifters, they will be.

My favorite YA's are Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy's and Rachel Caine's Morganville Vamps! :D

bacarleton(at)gmail(dot)com

I have Stephanie Meyers and my sister to thank for getting me into YA. TheTwilight series taught me not to fear "all things supernatural". I'd had a deep fear of it prior to this series. Harry Potter is anothe favorite. Im looing forward to yours!

Theres a tie for me between Looking for Alaska by John Green and The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. LFA was one the first YA books I read when I found out there was this "printz" award. I loved it. The Book Thief because it spoke to me on many different levels. Zusak has a way of writing a character that sticks with you long after the book is done and you just go back and re-read and he made me cry and understand. Awesome books! They both helped me understand that YA did not mean dumbed down!

I would have to say Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series. It sounded intriguing and my daughters loved it, so I thought, I have to read this book. That series opened up my eyes to what a wonderful genre YA is - not to mention that it was a compelling series - so it will always be one of my all time favorites.

And your book sounds fantastic - I love the title! That in itself would make me take a look at it, but a story about banshees? Now I have to read it!

Margay

I don't read a lot of YA, because I find that some of them are sometimes to childish. It sounds odd, but some are aimed at YA from 11-14, and I prefer the ones that are written for 14- 101 year olds!! I hope your YA's are the latter! I loved Twilight, and that's about it really. I'm looking forward to reading 'My Soul To Take' :D

I am currently studying to become a young adult librarian, but I've been enamored of the series for years. I'll read anything, really, because that is the best way to find a gem, but my favorites right now are the Percy Jackson series, the Chronus Chronicles, and Jellicoe Road (2009 Printz winner). But when my mood changes, so too do my favorites ;)

Well, right now I would have to say that my favorite YA book would be "Something, Maybe" by Elizabeth Scott. I even reviewed this book and I still couldn't do it justice; mostly because I know what its like to have your father ignore you and use you for his own gain. The in-depth in this book made me cry and laugh, all at the same time. I would recommend this book to all YA readers because it truly speaks a lot of teenagers in our nation.

I have a few favorites (I can't pick just one):

Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy
Melissa Marr's World of Faerie
Rachel Caine's Morganville Vampires
Kelley Armstrong's Darkest Powers
Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments

And I hope to add the Soul Screamers to this list. It sounds awesome and I'm really excited.

I started reading YA when a fellow blogger gushed on and on about Twilight. That was April of last year. Since then I have read books by Lisa McMann, Holly Black, John Green, Cassandra Clare, Carrie Jones and I’m currently reading Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr. I can’t seem to get enough of the YA urban fiction books, but if I had to choose I would say that Cassandra Clare’s City of Bones is my favorite. Having just discovered you, I just added The Shifter’s series to my Good Read list.

Oh, what's my favorite YA book and why. That's tough. I've been reading YA since before I was considered in the category, and now at 21, later than expected. My current favorite series though is probably Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead. It took me a bit to get into the first book, the protagonist is so different from me that I was a bit put off by her. As the series has progressed, she (Rose), has really grown up though and learned; she doesn't make the same mistake repeatedly which is refreshing. She does make mistakes, do not get me wrong, but it's not just a repeat. There are vampires (mythological creatures, of a sort) a twist to traditional lore, and romance, which are all musts when I read books. I'm very excited for the next book to come out. Other than your book, the new upcoming YA that I'm looking most forward to is probably Fairy Tale.

I just recently read Kelly Armstrong's The Summoning. Hadn't read any YA before that except when I was about 10 lol.
Very much enjoyed it and now actually looking into YA books where I already like the author (as in your case ;) )

Some of my favorite YA books would have to be the Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld. And Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games. They are both very talented writers, as are you.

~Can't wait for Prey and your Soul Screamers series!!!

*Alex McPeak*

I love YA, especially YA Urban Fantasy... for some reason I don't remember so many awesome YA books when I was a "young adult" myself.

My current favs include: Melissa Marr and L.J. Smith. I would love the chance to read your series as well! :-)

Sounds awesome, Rachel, and I love the cover! I'll be reading this whether or not I win it. :)

I don't think I could pick a favorite YA, but the one that had the most impact on me was reading the Lioness series by Tamora Pierce when I was 15. It spoke to me on so many levels and convinced me I had chosen the right path writing fantasy novels.

Wow, picking favorites is so tough!! Harry Potter will always have a special place in my heart!! They are what got me into reading (I hated books before I read the philosophers stone) So I will always love those books!! A close second is Juliet Marillier's "Wildwood Dancing" and "Cybele's Secret." She is an amazing author, she writes engaging loveable characters, and wonderful imaginative worlds. I love the way she takes old fairy tales and myths and turns them into memorable stories!!

Ohh, far too many to list...well I adore Tamora Pierce and am still reading her books and loving them. Despite being fantasy her characters are incrdibly believable and pull me right into the story. Sarah Dessen is also a firm favourite, especially "The Truth About Forever". Sarah writes with insight and emotion and always makes me think. I really enjoyed Suzanne Collins "Hunger Games" as well as Cassandra Clare and Holly Black...and I'll stop talking now.

Look forward to reading Soul Screamer!

Thanks.

Tina Christopher

My favorite YA book is the Prowler series by Christopher Golden. I love those books because their a spin on the werewolf legend so to speak, and they hardly seem like a teen book. Usually I stay away from teen books but yours is actually drawing me in. I'd love to have a chance to read it.

~Stephanie Brent

My favorite YA is Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. It is not due out for awhile, but I recently read an ARC and so far, it's my fave.

I'm excited to read your YA series!

shelcows AT gmail DOT com

Robin McKinley's The Blue Sword is my all-time favorite. Her writing is just -beautiful-, and the story was so interesting, I read straight through it in one day. I LOVE that book!

It is so difficult for me to choose a favorite YA book! At this point in time I would have to say either The Subtle Knife (second book in His Dark Materials) by Philip Pullman, or Lireal (second book in the Abhorsen series) by Garth Nix. The Subtle Knife because I love Will Parry, the main character, and I love the world Pullman created. I also love the other main character Lyra and her daemon Pan! Lireal I chose because I love the world they live in too. Crazy zombies, future seers, necromancers, hoards of zombie crows, a talking dog, and a sarcastic talking cat! Loved the whole trilogy and love Garth Nix!

I'm very excited about your new series I'm crossing my fingers to win!

What's your favorite YA book, and why?Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls. This novel reminded me why I loved to read.

Back in Elementary school, I had to participate in the program, Accelerated Reader (or AR, for short). For those of you who have never encountered it before, AR is an electronic testing program that accesses a student's comprehension on a variety of written materials. What this means is that a student picks out a book in the library (or from their local bookstore), reads it, and logs into the testing site to take the test associated with that novel/piece of nonfiction. Depending on their level of success (how many questions they answered correctly), a student can earn all/some of the "points" that are slapped on the book's spine. Most Gen Ed teachers require a certain amount of AR points by the end of each grading period.

Basically, children have to read in order to earn points, so they can receive a passing grade for this particular assignment.

As both a student and avid reader, I not only hated the program, but found it incredibly imposing. The program deemed half of the library "AR accessible", which meant a lot of books were left to gather dust on the shelf. No one had time to read anything that wasn't AR, and even if you did, your teacher would warn you that a non-AR book wouldn't "give you an A!" I couldn't check out the books I really wanted to read; all of the "acceptable" books were chosen for me. The program really took away the pleasure of reading and there was a point where I avoided the library, entirely.

I won't say that AR ruined reading for me, because it didn't. It put a damper on my enthusiasm for new authors and exciting titles. I didn't really enjoy reading again until I picked up Where the Red Fern Grows. I remember sitting up hours and hours after my bedtime, engrossed in a novel about a boy and two dogs that turned into his best friends. I don't remember much of the details. It's been a while since I've read the book. What I do remember is how I cried at the end, because for the first time in a long time, a character felt real. His emotions were real, and I could see the adventures in my head. The entire novel represented a homecoming for me. I had forgotten why I loved reading so much, and that novel and those words...they were the reason why I spent so much time curled in a chair, lost in fiction.

Man, I loved that book. I love the memory of loving that book.

I like most good YA abd I read a lot of it since I am a librarian. But I think my favorite is "Wicked Lovely" by Melissa Marr, even though I found its sequels to be a bit of a disappointment.

The first YA series I read was the House of Night series by the Cast ladies. I bought them for my daughter and she enjoyed them so much - she suggested I read them. They were very good reads. I love the whole concept of a school for vampires. :) I also enjoyed the following series:

Harry Potter
Morganville Vampires
Vampire Academy

I'm not sure if this is YA or childrens books - but I love the Artemis Fowl and Charlie Bone series.

M

What is my favorite YA book? hmmm...I'd have to say, as of right now (which this can change at any minute) it is Evermore by Alyson Noel. It's her first book in her "Immortal" series and I just loved Ever.

At the moment my favorite YA books is Jay Asher's Thirteen Reasons Why. The idea was just so different and since the girl had recorded her reasons on tape, I listened to the book on CD. Very cool. It was an excellent and different premise.

Other books I love were Mary E. Pearson's The Adoration of Jenna Fox and Markus Zusak's The Book Thief. I have a ton of favorites - I'm a librarian and try to read everything. Hurray for YA!

my favorite YA books would have to be L.J. Smith's The secret circle.

my favorite right now is the mortal instruments trilogy by cassandra clare- city of bones, city of ashes, city of glass. i love her characters, her world, and her snarky sense of humor! i would LOVE an arc of My Soul To Take!!!!!!!!!
-rachel s.

wow this is a tough one. If I have to pick one - The house of Night series. I love how the characters have developed and matured through the series.
Though I am reading Strange Angels right now by Lili St. Crow and it is a really good story that looks like it will be a great series.

What's your favorite YA book, and why?
Hmmmm...this is hard...but I have to say that my favourite YA book would have to be City of Bones by Cassandra Clare along with the rest of the Mortal Instruments, of course. The Mortal Instruments Trilogy kept me at the edge of my seat with all the action but also had me laughing like a lunatic. The characters were all interesting and well-rounded, not to mention, they all have a special place in my heart <3 Cassandra Clare is an amazing writer who keeps her readers hooked and is able to finish off her books beautifully.

I'm so excited for this contest! I'm sure My Soul to Take is going to be a great book.

ekta.p7[AT]gmail[DOT]com

My favorite YA is The Hanged Man by Francesca Lia Block. It was one of the first YAs I ever read and I love it because it's so raw and emotional and Francesca Lia Block isn't afraid to touch on some very dark subjects that other authors shy away from.

MY SOUL TO TAKE sounds fantastic!

My favorite YA book is THE BOOK THIEF by Markus Zusak. Actually, it made my list of one of my favorite books of all-time. It's a beautifully written story about several different people during Nazi Germany and what happened to them, how their lives intersected, etc. And interestingly, it's narrated by Death. It's truly an amazing book.

karenwitkowski AT aol.com

My all-time favorite YA series is The Secret Circle, by L.J. Smith. She was without a doubt my favorite author in high school. I was SO glad when she came out of hiding last year and started writing again. She's the reason I love paranormal and urban fantasy books. And also the reason I still read YA, even though I'm 26.

I also love Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy, and Rachel Caine's Morganville Vampires series. I'm a sucker for vamps.

my favourite YA is definitely Hunger Games. Though it didn't end quite the way i wanted it too, i still can't wait for the sequel!

i love the characters and the writing, and the fact that i haven't read anything quite like it before. (from the sounds of it, My Soul to Take is also really unique)

thanks for the contest :)

Emily H

"What's your favorite YA book, and why?"

I would have to say that mine is from L. J. Smith's series, the book is Spellbinder. I really enjoyed the way she wrote, and had to buy all her books once I started reading her series.

I've been focusing on YA fiction for my blog this month so I've read a LOT of YA urban fantasy in the past few weeks. I would have previously agreed with many here about Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy series, it's great!

But I really enjoyed Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr, a dark tale about fae and You Are So Undead to Me by Stacey Jay about a zombie settler. I love vampires as much as the next girl but I'm glad authors are trying other things. Definitely looking forward to the 'banshee' world you've created!

Please count me in for the giveaway! :D

My favorite YA books right now are the Vampire Academy Series by Richelle Mead. I adore her characters and the storyline. It's not so immature to where I can't relate. Even though the 1st book was hard for me to get into, the story has really gotten good in the last book. Another of my favorites is of course the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer. This is the series that really got me obsessed with reading again!

I so look forward to reading your Soul Screamers series!

Rachel, I hope you have a great time at your trip to NY! As for your contest, let me just first say I've been waiting for this one for awhile. I'm really excited about the concept and cannot wait to get my hands on it!

As for my favorite YA book, i'm going to have to claim an entire realm that has a few series in it. Tamora Pierce writes a series set in a place called Tortall, and has many facinating characters. It was really hard for me to even narrow it down to just the realm itself ;). YA or Adult books, I adore them all.

I'll have to go with Kelley Armstrong's Darkest Powers series. After reading her Otherworld series, I would have picked up anything she wrote...much like a certain Louisianan author I know. -wink wink nudge- Incredibly well-written, great character development. The characters are genuine teenagers in attitude and behavior without being oversimplified. I also like Richelle Meade's YA series as a very close second.

Hi Rachel, I'm so excited about these! I didn't read YA recently until I read Rachel Caine's Moganville and now I want to read more!!

My son who's 19, reads any YA books (as well as adults books) and tells me about so many and I do realize what I was missing and now I want to fit in more of those reads!

tbranxiety(at)yahoo(dot)com

My Favourtie YA Series would have to be The House of Night by PC + Kristin Cast. Being a big fan of PC's I just naturally picked up her YA Series, and am now hooked!

p.s. the cover is gorgeous Rachel!

I havent read any YA books.. but umm..My soul to take seems very interesting.. :P

I've always flitted between YA and adult. I love Tamora Pierce, though. I am reading her Beka Cooper series, and think it's the best of hers so far. :D

I'm Sixteen. I've been reading YA forever basically. My absolute favorites are mostly fantasy. I loved Tamora Pierce's books. I read the Alanna books first and went on from there. My favorite series of hers though is The Immortals series about Daine and Numair. Heir Apparant by Vivian Vande Velde, was the first book I read that was considered 'YA' and as such it earned a special place in my heart.

I love the classical YA books too. Or at least I consider them YA-ish. Such as Anne of Green Gables, or Treasure Island. I love To Kill A Mockingbird and it deals with adultish situations but through eyes and a point of view I could understand when I was younger.

So I'm super psyched about the Soul Screamers books. I've always loved Mythology and whatnot but I never could even begin to imagine a book abour Banshee's lol it's bound to be great! :)

My email is purdypirate@gmail.com

Thanks for hosting the contest.

My favorite YA book is probably "Keeping You a Secret." Becasue there are so few books about being a young girl attracted to girls and dealing with coming out. It was such a moving book.

I am so excited about the Soul Screamers series though. Cannot wait!

My all-time fave YA novel would be Libba Bray's AGATB, and Rebel Angels a close second. I hold a special place in my heart for these books because they were the first books to pull me out of my world (a soul-sapping and sucky place) and into some place so magical I could lose myself there. I love Gemma's humor. These books have all that yummy goodness that makes even the impossible seem possible... friends, action, the fantastical, and mixed-up crushy feelings. What's not to love?

I'm super-excited for Soul Screamers! The snippety synopsis has me itching to get me hands on it. I'm really looking forward to this one.

MY favorite YA book... hmm...

Well, recently I just bought and read one, and it's the first one I've been really enthusiastic about for a long while, and is definitely a favorite of mine. It's called Perfect Chemistry, by Simone Elkeles.

Why?

Well, they had issues, real life kinds. It wasn't unrealistic, and it was refreshing for me, since I tend to lean towards fantasy novels, haha. And I could relate to it, because I go to school in a town - though not the actual school; we're too... unusual - that has that kind of division of races and gangs and such. It's something I sort of grew up around, so the way I related to it was nice. Plus, it was hilarious; I kept laughing. Honestly, if and when you get free time (because we all know how incredibly busy you are!) I suggest it for a read.

Can't wait for the Soul Screamers book to come out.

My love for YA stems back to two particular series that influenced a lot of my reading tastes (still do):

The Secret Circle trilogy by L.J. Smith. I mean it had everything, the every-day heroine who turns out to be more than what she seems, witches, magic, forbidden love. *gusty sigh* Actually thinking about these makes me want to go pick them up again.

The Wild Magic series by Tamora Pierce. Again, it had a little bit of everything and I was delighted at the mythological aspects of it. And Daine, well she was fantastic.

Anyways, I'm really looking forward to the Sould Screamers books. The fact that the MC is one of my favorite mythological creatures ... well that's just the icing on the cake.

I find PC and Kristin Cast's House of Night series and Rachel Caine's Morganville Vampires highly addictive, but my favourite would have to be Melissa Marr's Wicked Lovely. As I've seen mentioned here already, YA is much better now than when I was actually a YA. There's something about a book that will happily ignore heavy duty sex scenes and the like - it's quite refreshing really.
I can't wait to get stuck into the Soul Screamers.

My favoutire YA book has to be Cassandra Clare's City of Bones and City of Ashes. I love the way she's set her whole story out in the middle of New York, and the twist in the love story, where it ends out that Clary and Jace are brother and sister. Unfortunately I live in the Uk and have to wait till July before I can get my hands on City of Glass.

My favorite YA book? you mean I can only pick one?? Since I am currently a teen and YA books are aimed at me I read a lot of them. I guess I'll go with one of the books in the Uglies trilogy because I just suggested it to a friend.

I cannot wait to read your screamer series and if it is even half as good as your shifter series I will not be disappointed. I hope I win and get to read your book before it come out, if not I'll read it later.

What's your favorite YA book, and why?

Hmmm....It changes constantly but right now it has to be everything out of LJ Smiths Nightworld series...but if I had to pick a story it would be 'Secret Vampire' it has romance, emotion and a gripping plot. Who is to say the Night world dosn't exist???

I'm in my early 20s and read a lot of YA. Still :) The book that comes to mind right now is Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead- I love how she based her vampires on Eastern European folklore and came up with such an amazing series. :)

Hmmm.... At the moment I would have to say my fav YA is Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr, I have read ink exchange but I still prefer WL.

Looking forward to your soul screamers release :D

Oh, I always struggle with "favourite book" questions. I don't have one favourite, I have about a million equal favourites *g*

I think I'll go with Feeling Sorry For Celia by Jaclyn Moriarty. Any book with letters from imaginary groups like The Society of Runners Who Aren't Any Good But Would Be If They Just Trained is up my alley *g* It's a little bit crazy, but it's lots of fun.

One of my Favourites has to be Morganville vampire series by Rachel Cain :D, so cant wait for her next book, and there’s twilight of course, and Vampire Acadamy by Rachell Mead, and the Vampire Diarys by L.J.Smith and Nightworld by L.J.Smith and so many others :D

I got into Morganville and Twilight specifically without realising they were YA but thoroughly enjoyed them, and read more from there, I cant say what it is that pulls you in, maybe it is the fact that it is just a different style in it own right, but I enjoy them as much as, sometimes more than, adult books.

I am really looking forward to Soul Screamers and if it anything like the Shifters series it is going to be fantastic :D

My entry into YA has been with the Richelle Mead "Vampire Academy" series and am reading the new series by Kelley Armstrong "Summoning, Awakening and cannot wait for Reckoning"... Both Authors write strong believable characters and even though am in middle 40's still able to relate to the main set of young men and women (or vampires and other creatures as the case may be) because there is no age barrier for life and all it's myriad difficulties....
I would love an ARC of your new book in the "Soul Screamer " series you are starting, love the shifter series so pretty sure this one will rock as well...
Thanks for the chance to win something....

"Wicked Lovely" is one of my absolute favorites and the "Twilight" series hooked me right in but Harry Potter will always be at the top of the list.

My ultimate favorite YA book is The Giver by Lois Lowry. The imagination required to write that book is amazing and the way it took me away to that world is wordless.

Loved it. And it will forever be my favorite YA book because it spoke to me the most.

Another great book would be Thirteen Reasons Why, another book that had a deep meaning.

"Deadline" by Chris Crutcher -- which I read after reading a review at Dear Author. Helped me to deal with the pending death of my dad and how he's chosen to deal with it better than any non-fiction book would have done.

Before that, I would have chosen "Wicked Lovely" by Melissa Marr because of how wonderfully written the story was -- totally sucked you into her fairy world

Well that is like asking what my favorite book is, I have to many. I just love books, favorite YA's include House of night books, Morganville Vampire, Kelly Armstrongs new YA tiltes are great, Vampire Academy is great as well....
Can you see a theme here....

Bstagner

I guess I'm hooked on Twilight for YA books :) But why I want yours...cuz it's YOURS! :) Of course I wanna read it! I'm so glad I stumbled upon your Shifter series :)

While it's been over a decade since I've been considered a member of the "Young Adult" readers club, I still enjoy the genre. I work at a middle school so it's nice to be able to recommend books that are more for the kids I teach than their teachers.

Here's my list (Some are YA and some are Teen--all are good.)
~SHIFTERS- Rachel Vincent
~GRACELING- Kristin Cashore
~HUNGER GAMES- Suzanne Collins
~HOUSE OF NIGHT- P.C. Cast & Kristin Cast
~TWILIGHT SAGA- Stephanie Meyer
~DRAGON RIDERS OF PERN- Anne McCaffery
~PERCY JACKSON SERIES- Rick Riordan
~GREGOR THE OVERLANDER- Suzanne Collins

Many of the books listed are already on my to-read list and I can't wait to add more as everyone comments.

Can't wait for the Soul Screamers series. It's definitely been on my list from day one!

I read a lot of everything - including YA - but I can't point to one as my favorite. Instead I'll give you what I think is my daughter's favorite: Twilight. If she wins this, we'll probably fight over which one of us gets to read your book first. =o)

Just found YA books and I've only read The Forest of Hands and Teeth -- RIVETING. I saw an article/blurb on it and then saw that you read it...Was an amazing book...my next YA will be yours! I did purchase Twilight but haven't read it yet!

Kim Vargo

I love the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead and I adore The Morganville Vampires by Rachel Caine.. It's a tie between them. The characters in both series are fun and loveable/hateable... You can't help but be sucked into their world. I love it when a book pulls me in and I'm so enthralled, I can't stop reading.. not for food, bathroom, shower... I actually get irritated when I have to stop for any reason.. I may have a problem.. LOL (I'm the same way with the Shifter's)

I haven't read too many YA books but from what I have read I like The Vampire Academy Series by Richelle Mead.

- Kaitlyn Vega

I just finished reading The A-List by Zoey Dean and enjoyed it!

I read YA because I preread for my newly turned teen. My fave YA so far? The House of The Night series by PC and Kristen Cast. My daughter wants to read what I do, and very few of my authors write YA. Or did. I see now that they are branching out into YA, much to my daughters delight! lol. She sees me rereading the Pride series, and really wants this book! So it would be a wonderful win! For her and myself!

YA favorites -
Rowling - Harry Potter (of course) - coming of age classic

Annette Klause - Silver Kiss & Blood & Chocolate (bears no resemblance to the movie)
Vivian Vande Velde - Companions of the Night
real problems (life not just YA)mixed with early urban fantasy

Newer authors/series??
Most all of the series mentioned in the other posts plus
Westerfeld - Midnighters trilogy

Would love an ARC of the first of your new YA

kykuch

I love PC Cast's House of Night Novels. I recently read them and fell in love. But it's a different view from a YA then an adult. So it's nice to switch it up sometimes! I also love LJ Smith's Vampire Diaries!

I haven't read a lot of YA but your Soul Screamers series looks so interesting I'd thought I start. Fingers crossed :)

I'm not sure if it's YA, but one of the best books I've ever read was "Sunshine" by Robin McKinley. The language was amazing, the story just sucked you in , and I didn't want the book to end.
Libba Bray Gemma's series were wonderful - despite the young age the characters were quite dark and very human, and the world Libba created was fantastic.
And at last, Ally Carter's Gallagher girls series is an absolute must read! A spy school for girls? That was incredible fun, I can't wait until the third book comes out.

I have two YA series that I absolutely love: Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments and Melissa Marr's Wicked Lovely series!
These authors are just amazing and they have a way of captivating your attention and never letting go. They've created such fun, unique and amazing worlds; that's what makes me love these books so much.

I'm really excited to read your new series!

Its really hard to choose between my favorite YAs, I really enjoyed hunger games by suzanne collins, but I have too many favorites really, thats just the first that came to mind.

-Janessa

The Hunger Games. That book was awesome and creepy and frightening. I loved the protag.

Everything in me screams Harry Potter but I have to say Northern Lights by Philip Pullman. I loved the idea that your soul could be shown as an animal. It is so imaginative and beautifully written.
Blinking-lights (AT) hotmail (DOT) com

i actually just finished, fangs 4 freaks, by sarena robar. i love YA

i actaully started reading it to see what my kids was reading but actually, i now love it.

also marlene perez, melissa marr, rachel caine, stepanie meyer, heather brewer, lj smith

OK, using "favorite" defined as the first thing that comes to mind that I enjoyed, I'll go with Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy series, mainly due to the characters and dialog.

And have fun in NY.

I own many YA books all of which I bought for my daughter. In the begining that is.
So far I've only read the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer. I guess that means it's my fav. And I do love those vamps. Anyway, we'll see if it stays the same once I read the other YA series I own. Some of those authors include Kelley Armstrong, Richelle Mead, and Melissa Marr.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that the random number generator finally picks me! Either way I'll be getting this one to read for sure!!

My favorite YA is The Sweet Far Thing by Libba Bray because it combines magic and realistic teen actions to create a book which is almost believable.

~MCL

Well, I have a few YA's from my youth that I still love. David Eddings, LJ Smith, and Tamora Pierce, to name a few. The most recent was STRANGE ANGELS because I'm a big Lilith Saintcrow fan. I don't really know what else is considered 'YA'.

I'm frankly just fascinated with your take on the banshee, and I'm anxious to see what you've done with the lore. It's more important to me to look for a good story than to look at the label on the cover. YA, fantasy, urban fantasy, paranormal - I don't care what it's called as long as it's a great yarn!

My favorite YA book well it's actually a series, by Rachel Caine, The Morganville Vampire series. It's my favorite because of the characters. They're not all happy go lucky, one dimensional, like some books. They're complex and each one unique. The characters are what makes me fall in love with books. It's the heart and soul. Well for me at least...

Yay! I'm really excited about this series!!

My Favorite YA book(s) are Kelley Armstrong's Darkest Powers Trilogy. I like this series because Chloe has a lot of the same teenage problems the rest of us do. I also like the character interaction, because like most teenagers they fight.

-Melissa Shannon (:

My favorite YA........
I really have enjoyed the Melissa Marrs' Fragile Eternity.
It was a wonderful extension of her Wicked Lovely series. This was my first read into the Fairy world. I find Ms Marr's world so easy to invision because her writing is so discriptive. It leaves you with so much hope for the future.

I loved City of Bones! The entire Mortal Instruments series was really good.

And just like I think everyone else has said, I love the covers for your Soul Screamers series. I can't wait to read them!

Right now i believe that my favorit YA book is Racheal Mead's Vampire Academy series. its fun and upbeat. The main character is a strong half vampire half human girl, it talks about her fight to save her best friend/ keep her safe. and at least try to stay in school. i apsolutly love it and would recomind it to anyone.

I already read your shifter books and i love the way you write it keeps me turning the pages.

i am exsided about the soul screamers novals and i hope they are just as good maybe even better then the shifter ones.

i would love to win a copy!

My favorite YA so far would be The Twighlight series. My teen daughter read the series & wanted me to read it too=)
I'd love to read this new series!

Luvdaylilies at bellsouth dot net

What's your favorite YA book, and why?I would have to say Melissa Marr's Fae series. However, I'm still fairy new to the Paranormal YA area. I do like Rachel Caine's Morganville Vampires though. And other than Twilight, those are the only YA novels that I think I've read.

If you haven't read YA before, why have you decided to try it nowI was looking for new authors and people kept going on about Caine's Morganville Vampires series so I thought I would give it a try. Honestly, Glass House was okay, but once you get to the second and third novel in the series, it gets really good. I was surprised. The one thing I found with YA, I dislike it when an author continually points out the age of the heroine. She's young, got it, let's leave it as is. As long as the story is good, I really don't care how old the characters are, but I don't like being constantly reminded about it.

I know I probably won't get one, but I absolutely would LOVE one Rachel. I like signing up, but I hate it when I don't ever win, cuz it seems like I'm really giving my hopes up. If I don't win, I won't be able to afford it for another at least five months cuz I'm having to buy an apartment. soo... I'd really love to get something to set my mind straight. ;)

What's your favorite YA book, and why?

I love Kelley Armstrongs the Awakening. I like it so much more than the first in the series because it has so much more debth to it. The characters feel more real and I love that you can see where some things are heading, but you don't know how its going to happen. She keeps it interesting, and I love that about books and series.

Oh, I would love to win this!! I think that my favorite right now is either Rachel Caine's Morganvill Vampires or Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy. Although, I just read Lili St. Crow's Strange Angels and I loved it.

Keeping my fingers crossed!

I'm so excited that i saw this post in time! I would love to read your new YA. I've really been getting into anything with folklore in it lately, and I'm a huge YA fan. I'm actually attempting my first YA right now.

Of the recent YA books that I've read lately, I really loved The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan, as well as Graceling by Kristin Cashore, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and Paper Towns by John Green. As for why, I'll go with The Forest of Hands and Teeth and say that I really loved the way the story flowed. it was non-stop from the beginning. I literally couldn't put it down. I was up until 4am finishing it the same day it started. Everything about the world felt believable, and I was so impressed with the thought she put into what would happen. I have a special affection for the aftermath and this was just such a great example of what happens after the worst happens. The characters were also well developed and I found myself extremely moved by their situation from the very beginning. Just an all around great book. I can't wait for the next one set in that world.

Being, just barely past the age when YA was actually written for me as the intended audience, I have read many YA's. Perhaps my favorite is "A Great & Terrible Beauty". It was amazing. Come to think of it... now that you made me think of my favorite YA, I think I might read it again this week! :)

Interested? Heck, yes!

My favourite YA book? Well, the one I re-read the most is Patricia C. Wrede's Mairelon the Magician duology(I count it as one because I own the omnibus, Magic & Malice) because c'mon, Regency London, magic and a dash of romance? Gotta love it. But...the one I'll have to call my favourite YA book of all time is L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables. Pure magic and a classic! *happy sigh*

My favorite YA books are from when I was a teen. The Fearless series was my crack - I loved the suspense of it all. I also love, love, love This Lullaby by Sarah Dessen.

jac8604(at)hotmail(dot)com

I'm still exploring the YA realm, but I have enjoyed the Morganville Vampire series. I'm anxious to read more of everything!

My favorite YA book right now would be "An abundance of Katherines" by John Green; it was fun, brilliant, very well written! I wished it could have lasted longer!

karynlapierre at hotmail dot com

Kelly Armstrong's Darkest Powers series, I loved The Summoning but preferred The Awakening and now I CANNOT wait until The Reckoning comes out!!!!
I'm a young adult myself and when reading some YA books I often find that the 'problems' the protagonists have or the language they use is not reflective of young adults, nevertheless I thought Kelley Armstrong captured young adult life completely and I was able to relate to her characters.

I'm soooo excited about your YA series, and it would be awesome to win but either way I'm getting it when it comes out !!!!!!

Dandy xxxx

Oh, don't make me choose!
It's probably between Richelle Meads, Vampire Academy series, Rachel Caines, Morganville Vampires series & P.C + Kristin Casts, House Of Night series.
Oh now my brain's swimming with awesome books! Thanks a lot ): (just kidding Rachel :D )
It changes weekly though!

My fave YA book? Hard to say. I've always read YA since I was old enough for it... I love a lot of books. One of my faves is Breathing Underwater by Alex Flinn.

I am happy that there is a lot of really good YA books out there these days. I'm in my late 30s and don't remember much in the way of good YA fantasy and Urban fantasy way back then. I ended up reading adult books instead and now I'm reading more YA than I did when it was age appropriate ;)

For a favorite? That's hard. I'm going to say Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr. I love the characters and the story. It is just so good :)

My favorite YA is an older one - The Changeover by Margaret Mahy. I think it's because the guy the heroine is interested in is so frickin' weird - it was hard to read him, which is how I felt about boys at the time I read the book!

My favorite YA book would be Keturah and Lord Death. I reead it last year and it was amazing! A very origional story that pulled me in. The Two Princesses of Bamarre would be a second choice, because ut was also an all around good book!

My favorite YA book is Tithe by Holly Black. It was one of the first YA books I ever read and what initially got me into the genre. While I'm a bit more open to reading YA (obviously considering I'm entering your contest!) I'm still a little picky when it comes to them.

And I have to agree wit Dottie, I just recently read Strange Angels by Lili St. Crow and it was very good.

My favorite YA books are the Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper. I have no idea how many times I've read them, it's one of those that I keep coming back to. I just love her writing, and the stories as well. I've found that I like a lot of the YA fantasy books more than the adult ones!

Historically, I haven't really read YA. I've read the Twilight books, of course, but they aren't really on my favorites list. I'm heading out to get Once Dead, Twice Shy by Kim Harrison which just came out yesterday. And I'm sure I'd like Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy books. And I'm sure I'll like your foray into YA as well. :)

The first YA I ever read was Nancy Drew, and I devoured everyone of them. It was so exciting to read about a regular girl getting thrown into some extraordinary circumstances. The books had a big impact on my life.

But if I had to pick something more recent, I'd have to choose Holly Black's Modern Faerie Tales series. She proved that you could set fantasy in the real world and pull it off fantastically. :)

My favorite YA books are the Magic or Madness trilogy by Justine Larbalestier and the Harry Potter series of course. Oh and I am loving Rachel Caine's series also!I can't pick just one book. I have quite a few series that I am looking forward to trying such as :

Twilight (only read first book so far)
Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy Series
PC Cast and Kirsten Cast's Series

I love hearing everyone's recommendations for YA books! Rachel your YA books sound awesome and I will cross my fingers and toes that I win a copy! :) I love the covers too. Absolutely fabulous.

So many to chose from. I can't pick just series, let alone one book, but the top three are Vampire Academy, Morganville Vampires and Wicked Lovely!

I still own all of L.J. Smith's books - every single one. They turned me on to reading. I also love Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card.

~A. Soyez

My favorite YA author is really tied between Amelia Atwater-Rhodes and Tamora Peirce. Amelia's stories have a new spin to shapeshifters and vampires and witches that keeps the reader from putting the book down. Tamora Peirce's books are all on women as heroes in a mans world. Its refreshing to read about a female heroe willing to work to get what she wants (much like Faythe) rather than it be handed to her through some gift or technicality.

I enjoy YA because it seems to let many authors have more creativity. Adult books tend to lack in some areas.

Oh I didnt say why I love those series books...hmm. Ok..lemme re-enter and follow instructions! LOL

If I had to pick my favorite YA book I'd go with Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. I choose this book because it's my favorite of the series with lots of action and secrets revealed. I can't wait to see the movie!

i'd have to say Harry Potter cause he the first younger book I've read and man I wish that some of the fantastic book that are out now were out when I was that age.

I adore Obernewtyn (okay, the whole series actually) by Isobelle Carmody. The first and foremost reason I love this series is because the protagonist's name is Elspeth ~the same as my daughter.
We meet Elspeth in an age where technology has been lost and the world is ruled by a totalitarian regime set on purging the world of anyone with psychic abilities. The post-nuclear-apocalypse Earth is slowly revealed through Elspeth's life of trying to keep her psychic abilities hidden, and then once found out, through her experience in the prison camp, Obernewtyn. As Elspeth learns that there may others like her, she also uncovers some truths about the "Beforetime" (before nuclear apocolypse) and her role in freeing herself and others like her from oppression. And did I mention her only friend is Maruman, a strange looking cat who she can communicate with through her thoughts?
This book sets the stage for a truly fantastic series that I have loved for ages.

My favorite YA series so far is P.C. Cast & Kristin Cast for The House of Night Series...I've been reading the series back to back & I'm on the 5th book. I love this series!

There are few other series that I'm interested in reading. first became interested YA more for my niece who like to read some of my books. However not all my books are for 16 year old to read. So when I was looking for books of the same genre, I began noticing..that a lot of my favorite adult sci fi authors were writing YA..How can you go wrong?

I think my favorite young adult or teen books now would have to be PC and Kristen Casts House of Night Series.

I have the Vampire Diaries and Twlight series on my shelves and I just got Blue Blood from Paperbackswap. I want Kelley Armstrong's series.

I can't wait for yours to come out, it looks really good. Even though I am older, I love to read a good book and sometimes the teen books are what I need after a very hot and steamy erotica one. As you can see my taste range a lot.

This sounds so fun - please count me in.

Favorite YA novel? I liked A Wrinkle In Time by Madeline L'Engle and the Codex Alera series by Jim Butcher.

gaby317nyc AT gmail DOT com

My favorite? I don't think I could pick just one 'favorite' book. The author I would most recommend in Tamora Pierce (who I actually discovered after I started reading adult fantasy). Really she is one of the authors that made J. K. Rowling's success with Harry Potter possible, so that's who I would recommend.

my favorites are the twilight series. my daughter got me hooked and once i open the pages i could not put them down
pksanddancer@yahoo.com

I can't really pick what YA novel is my favorite because I have so many. I love reading, but one book that I always keep reading is...The Truth About Forever By: Sarah Dessen

SO hard to choose. Maybe Bridge of Birds by Barry Hughart for the sheer delight of the story. I am not sure it even ranks as a YA novel.

Weetzie Bat by Francesca Lia Block is awesome for its unexpectedness. But the list could go on forever: Ender's Game; A Wizard of Earthsea; The House of the Scorpion; The Golden Compass; Hunger Games; The Outsiders; Artemis Fowl; The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm; Howl's Moving Castle; Graceling; The Witch of Blackbird Pond; Sabriel; Alanna; Amulet of Samarkand....

So far, ;), my favorite YA book is the Twilight series. It's my favorite because it grabs my attention and never lets go. it relates to how I feel. I understand where Bella's coming from and its easy to relate and put myself there with her. Im a sucker for love & action combined stories, and this one's just simplisticly amazing! but, I haven't read yours yet either ;-)
Liz Benford

Favorite YA?

Vampire Academy, Richelle Mead.
I really love the series, for so many reasons! The protagonist, Rose Hathaway is such a strong character. Physically, she is deady. Emotionally, she is able to bare the weight of her world. She past, present and future are littered with strife and hardship but she refuses to succumb to the chaos. There are many strong heroines out there in the YA world, but Rose is also not afraid to show her true feelings, which I consider to be another aspect of strength. Part of me loves Rose so much because I wish I could be like her (not unlike how I feel toward Faythe.)

She is also a dynamic character, growing up and finding herself along the way. Life isn't straight forward anymore, but she does what she has to and keeps moving forward.

Also, there is of course the love story: A forbidden love between teacher (24) and student (17). In the course of teaching Rose to fight, Dimitri (the instructor) is her friend and her confidant when Rose can't rely on anyone else. He helps her mature, while she helps him to recognize and come to terms with the emotions he's been holding back for so long. They compliment each other perfectly. He helps her control herself, and she teaches him to live.

And if the heroine and her forbidden love wasn't enough, I must applaud the world Ms. Mead has created. She took the classic, overplayed vampire and remade it into something original and exciting. As far as I am concerned, Ms. Mead can do, and does, it all. She writes power packed action scenes AND presents a powerful, undeniable love. She has readers everywhere hanging on to one whispered word: Roza. Her knowledge and understanding of teenage angst and rebellion is uncanny.

It was an emotional rollercoaster. I laughed, I cried, and I fell in love.

My favorite YA book is HUNGER GAMES because it's been a while since I've been so addicted to a book that I couldn't put it down. I love the non stop action, the tender blossoming romance between the two leads and the way the whole story ends so satisfyingly. Can't wait for the sequel!

Twilight series for sure.

I like reading YA books. I think that, overall, I'd have to go with favorite author - Jim Kjelgaard.

I was "introduced" to him back in the dark ages of middle school and I keep coming back to him for a good read.

His stories are a bit like Jack London in that nature and animals feature prominently in them, but I find him a little easier to read than London (although I really enjoyed his books as well).

One of my favorite Kjelgaard books is Stormy.

I love the entire Harry Potter series.
Thanks!

Love the Night World Series by L. J. Smith.

I can't wait to read your series.

Favorite YA? Three way tie:

-Terrier by Tamora Pierce
-Uglies trilogy by Scott Westerfeld
-Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead

All on grounds of voice, originality, and feeling of realness.

I love Faythe's world, so I can't wait to see Kaylee's.

My favourite YA series right now is Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments but I also really like Trudi Canavan's Black Magician books and Garth Nix's Old Kingdom trilogy.

I just started delving into YA litature. What got me started? I think the reasoning would come from quite a few people after the "Twilight" series; it made me realize these books were still an interesting read, even if they were geared for YA.

Hopefully my reading list will expand with many new YA authors now.

Thanks for the opportunity! Indigo

I've been reading YA for as long as I can remember. I'm now 21 years old and am addicted to reading. I will read almost anything I can get my hands on! I think it's sad that a lot of people dismiss YA as it is often labeled "teen" and therefore too "young" for there oh so mature selves. Little do they know they are missing out on some fantastic writting!

I'm going to have to say my favorite YA has got to be Juliet Marillier's latest YA novel entitled Cybele's Secret. She si another author who started out writing for an older audience and decided to encompass the YA readers too.

I can't wait for the soul screamers series...it sounds like it is going to be amazing! I'm also anxiously awaiting Prey! Keep up the great work Rachel! I would love to win this giveaway...but I think everyone knows I'll be at the bookstore the day it comes out if I don't :)

thanks!

I like Kelley Armstrong "Darkest Powers"; Pullman's "His Dark Materials" is great; Harry Potter and Twilight are inevitable to mention.
Thanks for a chance to win a copy of this book. I sounds like a good read.

I have tons of fav YA but off the top of my head I'd have to say P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast's House of Night series.

Oh, geez, I have no idea. Um, Vampire Diaries by L.J. Smith cracked me up on account of its corniness and the Twilight Saga wasn't bad, cliche to all heavens, but not bad. I dunno, I haven't read too many YA books but now that so many authors I read are going in that direction, I may start!

Honestly, the last YA series I read, I all but gagged on. I couldn't stomache it because it wasn't written very well. (not going to name any names.) But having read your Shifter series, I know your a great writer and I'm trying to give the YA genre another try. Plus I love reading new takes on different legends and creatures.

This is a tough one. I'd have to say that Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer is my current favorite YA book. My favorites change all the time though so I imagine that's only valid for the next eight hours, two minutes and 43 seconds.

I love all YA books. My favorite YA series that I just finished happened to be the Twilight series. I am pretty excited to get into the seires that you are starting to write for the first book looks amazing and I cannot wait for it to come out.

My Favorite Young adult book or series, that is a hard question for me. But if it was a life or death question I would have to say the House of Night Series by PC and Kristen Cast. Why, I really like their take on the vampire world, and each new book holds a new surprise. Zoe is a very believable character, with normal teenage issues, I know I have a 17 year old daughter, and some of the things in the story match up with what is going on in her life.

I see some YA series mentioned here that I have not read yet- and some that I have not thought of as YA. Maria Snyder's Cast series is really good- an all around good series for all ages! I am hoping for this one!

Hello Rachel~

Hope you have fun at BEA. Wish I lived closer and could go. :)

To answer your question of why I've decided to try YA now? Two reasons:

1) My 14 year old daughter reads it and I thought it might be fun to discuss the same books.
2) There is a lot more to choose from now, especially with PNR/UF in YA.

My favorite is definitely something by Christopher Pike. I would say, out of all of his books, my favorite is Whisper of Death.

Hi Rachel. Your book sounds good. I will have to say Harry Potter are my favorite YA books. I have been wanting to read the Twilight series.

I enjoyed Forever by Judy Blue as its a great book about first love.

Thanks for the giveaway!

My daughter has convinced me that I have to read My Soul to Take when it comes out. It sounds pretty interesting as well. I don't have a lot of time to read, and haven't really read any YA either. My daughter is the reader in the family.

~Sue

Really the only YA I've read is Harry Potter. Finding time to read is hard and it took me awhile to actually sit down and read Harry Potter. My Soul to Take does sound interesting though!

~Carrie

My favourite YA book is A Burning Time by Carol Matas, which is about the Witch Trials, and A Dance for Three by Louise Plummer. Both of these stories sucked me in and made me angry, happy, and sad while reading them.

~ Popin

I've read very little YA. But from the small stack of YA I have read, Ink Exchange is by far my favorite (followed closely by Fragile Eternity). Why? Because the story is so captivating and her style is wonderful to read. Her characters are all well rounded and the story never feels forced. I also love her dedication to Folklore. I was so happy to find a Faery story where the Faeries weren't visible to Mortals. :)

I've actually been reading far more YA novels now that I'm in my mid twenties than I ever did when I was a teenager.

I'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite YA author, let alone book. Holly Black and Melissa Marr are definitely both way up there on the list, as is Scott Westerfeild.

Hmmm...Nope won't be picking. ^_^

Can't wait to see your contribution to the blooming genre, Rachel!

I love YA books. I can't pick just one book, but I do have a few favorite series.

1. Gallagher Girls by Ally Carter
2. House of Night by PC Cast & Kristin Cast
3. Morganville Vampires by Rachel Caine

I love that each of these series are so well written. I also get to share my books with my two oldest nieces, so that is nice too.

My favorite YA Book is the Tortall Series by Tamora Pierce.

These books combine knights, magic, fantasy in one of the perfect mixes.
Knights, Mages, Dragons, Thieves...it's a great mix.

Does Harry Potter count? :) That started my venture into YA years ago. Besides those, I have to say my favorite so far is Artemis Fowl series. Finally, books where all the cool kids are geniuses.

My favorite YA would be the Codex Alera series by Jim Butcher. I find the characters simpatico and find myself cheering them on and feeling very invested in their choices and the outcomes of their fights.

pls count me in

I am addicted to YA books. I've read so many recently it's hard to choose my favorite, but if I had to, it would be the Night World series by L.J Smith. I love these books because it focuses on paranormal beings, which are my favorite subject to read about, and it is a page turner. Each book is suspenseful and keeps you interested until the last page.

lovinfitch(at)aol(dot)com

YA series are kind of new to me. I've only recently begun to take a new interest in them. And what a great time to come back into the genre with yourself and a few other favorite authors of mine beginning all new YA series.
My favorite YA series? Without a doubt it would be L J Smith's The Forbidden Game series. Love these three books. Hard to pick a favorite amung them but if I had to, I think it would be book 3 "The Kill".

This is not an easy question, same as "what's your favorite book?" it's really difficult to pick one

I really love YA books even though i'm 24 i still love to read them.
But i'm picky about what i read now

It's not easy to decide, i guess that would be:
- Cassandra Clare's City of Bones

Because it was the first book that made me forget i wasn't a teenager anymore, i just lived the book and i loved it. The Mortal Instrument trilogy was a real pleasure to read and read again

It wasn't the first YA book i read, that would have been Harry Potter or His Dark Material

i really look forward My Soul To Take , this is a new series i really can't wait to read

The best YA book I've read so far is "Shadow Kissed" by Richelle Mead. I loved all her VA books, but "Shadow Kissed" ends with a such a huge cliffhanger that I simply can't wait for the next book in series! August isn't coming soon enough for me! :P

You might say that the VA books have all the same ingredients as the other paranormal YA books: strong but imperfect heroine, the oh-so-irresistible hero (I just simply adore Dimitri!),the impossible relationship between those two, high school issues etc.; but I think that Mead found the best way to mix them all and as a result serves a truly riveting plot.

ps. I especially like the way she manages the balance between the "young" and "adult" elements - I'm quite a bookworm and haven't seen it done so well yet - it makes the book "readable" not only for teens, but also a bit older readers.

My favourite YA must be the Morganville Vampires by Rachel Caine because...well, have you read them? The characters are so believable, the plots are really good and full of surprises and you get incredibly hooked. :)

Tamara Pierce was the author that brought me to YA. I have read everyone of her books. But my faovorite is "Lady Knight" the last book of her Protector of the Small Series.
I am male and 62 years old but all my life I have love reading books with a strong female protagonist. Tamara Pierce stories have almost always had this in common. But Lady Knight always catches my eye when shopping in book stores.

I have limited book shelves so I regularly clean them out,to the use boook stores. So this one book has been bought by me at least 8 times so I could re-read it.

Now writing about it has made me want to read it again. Oh well, maybe the nearby used bookstore still has my last copy.

Unless the book is undeniably predictable, I don't have one because each young adult book (and all other books) have something awesome in them that make reading them sooo good.

I'd have to say that my fav. YA book(s) are Holly Black's Tithe, Valiant, and Ironside
