A long, rambling RT report

[For some reason, Blogger won't let me post pictures today, so I'll try to post them tomorrow. Until then, I've posted a few (not the ones I plan to post here) in today's Deadline Dames post.]

Okay, now that I’ve been back for several days, I think I’ve gained enough perspective to rehash RT somewhat coherently. But really, I’m making no promises.

This was my fifth RT (I was also at the ones in St. Louis, Daytona Beach, Houston, and Pittsburgh), and looking back, I’d have to say it was definitely one of the best.

I arrived around noon on Wednesday, and Jocelynn, my conference roomie, met me in the lobby. Unlike past hotels, this one was actually a complex (compound?) with sixteen different buildings, and our building was on the opposite side of the property, and I bet it took us twenty minutes to find our room that first time. We actually had to consult the posted maps (like at the zoo) twice. ;-)

After I settled in, we went for lunch at the poolside bar/restaurant, where we found Jenna Black. Then we wound our way back around to the main building so I could register. Then, as sometimes happens we ran into several more friends and spent the remainder of the day and evening by the pool (under a table shade, mostly), getting caught up with people I hadn’t seen since the last conference.

On Thursday I sat on three young adult panels, and they were all awesome. Except for the fact that I kept forgetting to mention the name of my own forthcoming young adult novel. Yes, seriously. For the record, it’s My Soul to Take. ;-)

On Thursday night, my agent took me and Jennifer Lynn Barnes (she’s not an agency-mate, but she’s just too awesome to leave behind) to a great seafood restaurant where they print a new menu every day, depending on what fresh food is flown in that day. My shrimp was sooo good, and the chocolate cake truly beyond words. In a good way.

I slept in a little on Friday morning (for two of the days I was gone, I was actually up for 21 straight hours), then had lunch with some friends at the hotel restaurant. Then I shared the Tim Tams Keri Arthur brought me with some friends while I waited for my last panel, with Jeaniene Frost, Jeri Smith-Ready, Illona Andrews, and Mark Del Franco. Illona was hilarious as captain (I mean, overlord), and while I feel like I floundered a bit at first, I practically monopolized the panel with my last answer. Oops!

After the panel was the Reviewer’s Choice awards, where Keri Arthur won a lifetime achievement award, and the awesome Ilona Andrews won best urban fantasy. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to watch them accept their awards because I scheduled for an off-site group signing at the Borders in Ovedio.

Other than seeing friends I’d been missing all year, that signing was the very best part of RT for me. Melissa Marr, Jeaniene Frost, Marc Del Franco, Jennifer Lynn Barnes and I grabbed coffee and snacks at the bookstore coffee shop, then sat down in front of a waiting audience and answered questions for an hour and a half before we started signing books. We were there for three hours. It was amazing. The audience was enthusiastic and curious, and the store manager was so incredibly nice. And impeccably prepared. If I’d known bookstore signings could be so much fun and so little stress, I might actually have done more of them in the past.

After the signing, we wound up at Chili’s for a late dinner, and by the time we drove back to the conference hotel, it was nearly midnight. I sat with my agent and Jenna Black for a few minutes, then went back to my hotel room to crash.

I actually didn’t see Jocelynn much at all that day, because she ditched! She and her agent went to Disneyland! If I hadn’t had an amazing day myself, I would have been jealous. ;-)

Saturday was the mass signing, and I was both impressed and terrified by the number of books waiting for me. They had all three of the available Shifters books, and since none of them are new releases, I was afraid I wouldn’t sell any of them. But I actually made a sizeable dent in the pile! I also met several book sellers, signed bookplates for both of the Australian booksellers who came, and promised swag to at least half a dozen bookstore owners.

Oh, and one very clever bookseller (B&N, I think?) actually talked me out of my last ARC of Prey. She was so enthusiastic and obviously desperate for it that I couldn’t turn her down. ;-)

Saturday afternoon, I said goodbye to several friends who left early, then settled in at the poolside restaurant with Jocelynn, Jennifer Lynn Barnes, and my fellow Dames. The service was horrible—Keri’s mini-burgers were still dripping blood!—but the company was fantastic. After we finally got our checks, Karen and Jennifer went back to their rooms and Jocelynn went to check out that evening’s conference-sponsored party, and Keri, Jackie, Jenna and I wandered into the indoor restaurant to wait for our agent to return from her "pirate adventure."

Around eleven, I made myself say my goodbyes. I always want to drag out those last moments of a convention, but I had to get up at 3:30am to catch my flight, and I wasn’t even packed yet.
So, after three hours of sleep, I got up and dressed (quietly, hoping not to wake up Jocelynn), then snuck off to the airport in the dark.

In summary, RT was sooo much fun this year. And I got several signed books (though not as many as I’d intended) to give away here this summer.

Also, if anyone has any pictures from the signings or the panels, please let me know! As usual, I hardly used my camera. ;-(

Oh, and don't forget to scroll down to win a signed copy of Jocelynn's Dayhunter!

Dayhunter contest!

[This contest is now closed. Check back soon for a chance to win an ARC of Prey!]

As most of you know, I spent most of last week in Orlando, for the 2009 Romantic Times Booklover’s Convention. One of the best parts of going to RT is seeing friends I only get to see once or twice a year. Including Jocelynn Drake, my con roomie for several years now. Jocelynn and I started out on the journey toward publication together. We were both querying agents back in 2005 (I believe), and I predicted that someday we’d be signing books together.

I was right. ;-)

Anyway, today is the official release day for Dayhunter, the second book in Jocelynn’s Dark Days series. To celebrate, she’s giving away a signed copy right here.

About the book:

A new day dawns blood red

A master of fire, Mira is the last hope for the world. For centuries she has secretly enforced the history-altering edicts of the Triad. Now she and her unlikely ally—the human vampire hunter, Danaus—have come to Venice, home of the nightwalker rulers. But there is no safety in the ancient city, for the threat of conflict is in the wind . . . with unholy alliances and earth-shattering betrayals taking hideous form in the shadows.

Banished for eons beyond the world's boundaries, the malevolent naturi prepare to feed once again upon a vulnerable earth—and treachery is opening wide the portal that will enable their dread re-emergence. The great battle that has always been Mira's destiny is looming, and she must remain powerful in the face of a shocking revelation: that Danaus, the only creature she dares to trust, is something more than the man he claims to be . . .

Thanks to everyone who entered to win an early copy of Devon Monk’s Magic in the Blood. We had an amazing turnout! And if you didn’t win, remember that the book goes on sale everywhere on May 5th.

Now for the winner…

Leigh Ann Baird, who wrote: Thanks for the chance to win! I enjoyed the first book and am looking forward to this one!

Leigh Ann, please email me (rachelATrachelvincentDOTcom) with your full name and mailing information, and I’ll forward it to Devon, who will sign your book and put it in the mail.

In other news, the day before I left for Florida, my Prey ARCs came in the mail, and I’ll be posting a giveaway today at my discussion group. You’ll have another chance to win one here next week, but The Pride always gets the first shot, so if you’re a member, check in there today.

Also, I came home from RT with several signed books to give away, and in a couple of days, I’m going to let you guys choose what comes up for grabs first, in a poll in the sidebar. But first, I have one more new release contest lined up, and it’ll go in the contest tab as soon as I get a chance to post it.

Don’t worry I know that’s a lot of stuff to remember, so here’s the quick list:
  • Prey ARC giveaway this week at The Pride
  • Prey ARC giveaway here next Monday
  • New release giveaway here this week (hopefully tomorrow)
My favorite things about the Romantic Times Booklovers Convention:

• Meeting readers
• Meeting booksellers
• Hanging out with writer friends I only see once or twice a year
• Answering questions on panels (once I've had my coffee)
• Signing books
• Meeting with/hanging out with my agent
• Scoring signed books to give away on my blog

And... This was the first time the Deadline Dames have gotten together in any real numbers. And now that I've met Dame Karen, I've officially met all my fellow dames!

I have a few pictures and I hope to borrow/be sent even more. So, tomorrow I'll announce the winner of a signed copy of Devon Monk's Magic in the Blood, (You have until 11:59 pm Central Time tonight to enter.) then I'll do a convention recap for the rest of the week.

And... tomorrow I'll be posting a giveaway of my first ARC of Prey on my discussion board. (I'll give the last one away here next week.)

Magic in the Blood

Okay, while I shop, and pack, and panic in preparation for Romantic Times 2009, I have something better in store for you guys. Another giveaway!

Hopefully everybody remembers Devon Monk’s Magic to the Bone, which I gave away last year. I seriously loved that book, and now Devon has offered us an early copy of her May 5th release, Magic in the Blood, which is currently near the very top of my must-read-now pile. (And frankly, I’m getting cranky over the lack of free reading time. Thinking of pulling a Drop Everything And Read, like in Elementary school.)

This contest is open to international contestants.

About the book:
"Magic stirred in me, offering whatever I wanted. With little more than a thought and a gesture or two, I could make magic do anything. So long as I was willing to pay the price..."

Allison Beckstrom knows better than most that when magic's involved, nothing is free. She's had to pay its price of migraines and forgetfulness while working as a Hound, tracing illegal spells back to their casters. And even though magic has stolen her recent memory--including her history with the man she supposedly fell in love with--Allie isn't about to give up on Hounding or the city she cares about.

Then the police's magic enforcement division asks her to consult on what seems to be a straightforward missing-persons case. What begins as a way to make rent leads Allie into grave danger when the trail she's following draws her into the dark underworld of criminals, ghosts, and blood magic. There, Allie discovers it will take more than just magic to survive....

P.S.2. Check back next week to win an ARC of Prey!

City of Souls winners!

The random number generator has spoken again, and the following two people have won ARCs of Vicki Pettersson's City of Souls:

Jackie Ballway and blackrose37yahoo.com

Winners, please email me (rachelATrachelvincentDOTcom) with your full name and mailing address. I'll forward your information to Vicki, and she'll sign your ARCs and put them in the mail.

I'll be busy today and tomorrow working on revisions for My Soul to Save and getting ready for RT, and I leave early on Wednesday for Orlando. But check back in tomorrow, because I have another giveaway for you while I'm gone!

ARCs everywhere!

First of all, I have breaking news on the current contest. Vicki is impressed with the turnout and has offered us a second ARC! So if the odds were getting you down, your chances have just doubled, and now's a great time to enter. Click here.

On another ARC front, yesterday my editor tracked down three ARCs of Prey, and with any luck, they'll be shipped to me today. I'll be giving one away here and one in my discussion group (this one will come first) so check back soon. Enter both contest to double your chances.

And... I have another giveaway lined up for next week, while I'm in Orlando. It's not an ARC, but it is a not-quite-released urban fantasy sequel I've been dying for. The publisher sent me a copy last week, and it's moved to the top of my TBR pile. Unfortunately, I won't be pleasure reading until I meet my three rapidly approaching deadlines (each 2 weeks apart), but when I do, I'm going on a reading binge.

Speaking of deadlines, I dove into the revisions for My Soul to Save (Soul Screamers book 2) yesterday, and had an unexpected bit of trouble getting back into the right place for that. I had to put Shift down in the mid-rewrite, and my head was still very much with Faythe and crew. So I pulled out My Soul to Take (Soul Screamers book 1) and read several long sections of that to re-anchor myself in Kaylee's world.

It worked! Brilliantly! And to my absolute delight, I discovered that I still love TAKE (official shortening of my own too-long title). Love it! I wanted to read the whole thing over again. Instead, of course, I now get to work on SAVE and fall in love with it again. In many ways, I like SAVE better than TAKE. The plot and the world-building are stronger, and Kaylee really gets to show off her smarts.

But in SAVE, Kaylee and Nash already know each other, so my main goal with this revision is to keep the chemistry strong. Because, frankly, it was pretty hot (for a YA) in TAKE. I need to make sure that familiarity fans the flames, rather than dousing them. ;-)

Now, off to revise!

Flip this deadline

[Note about the current contest: Vicki says it is open to international contestants!]

Well, as sometimes happens when an author has multiple, overlapping deadlines, two of mine have been switched, which means that I have to stop rewriting Shift to work on revisions for My Soul to Save.

Fortunately, I'm pretty happy about this. MSTSave is a shorter book and needs less work than Shift at the moment, so I basically have a one-month extension on Shift. And I think I have a pretty good grip on what MSTSave needs, and am thrilled to be diving back into that one. The dialogue needs work, and Nash's character underwent a pretty big re-envisioning during the revisions for MSTTake, so I have to update him accordingly in this book. And I want to tweak the timeline. But I think the second half really shines, and this second book in the Soul Screamers series is darker than the first, with a ticking clock (love how that quickens the pace!) and more danger, both for Kaylee and for those she's trying to help.

And a whole element of her world we've only seen glimpses of before. (My favorite part!)

And I've just realized that while you really need to read my Shifters books in order (at least after the first two) to understand what's going on, that's not true with the Soul Screamers series. They are a series, and some themes do build on earlier books, but (so far, at least) they stand alone very well, and I'm so proud of myself for that! ;-)

Okay, I gotta get to work, now that I have the non-writing business taken care of for today, but don't forget the current contest! Still three days to enter!

City of Souls ARC!

Update: Vicki has offered a second ARC, doubling your chances of winning, and the contest is open to international entries!

[I've posted at the Deadline Dames today too!]

Sorry for my absence. I went out of town for Easter and stayed a couple of extra days for some personal business (out of state accountant, anyone?) and to see friends from Oklahoma. Had a blast! But I've returned bearing gifts!

Okay, one gift. But it's a special one. My friend and agency-mate (and all-'round awesome person/author) Vicki Pettersson has volunteered an ARC of her June 30 release, City of Souls, The Fourth sign of the Zodiac. That's right, Joanna's back, and this one won't be available in stores for another 2 and a half months, which makes this a pretty exclusive giveaway... ;-)

About the book:

In Sin City, a little girl suffers from a strange and terrible malady. If she dies, the Light will die along with her.

Warrior, avenger, Joanna Archer has survived countless otherworldly terrors—and has found her rightful place among the agents battling the all-pervasive evil of Shadow . . . even as she struggles against the darkness within herself.
A war is raging for Las Vegas—a city without a heart—one that catapults Joanna into a new world hidden from mortal sight. In this lethally seductive alternate dimension the lines blur between good and evil, love and hate, and here lies the last hope for the Light. But Joanna's price of admission is a piece of her own soul—and the odds of her escaping are slim . . . to none.

So, if you're interested, here's how to enter:
  • Leave a comment here by 11:59 pm on Sunday, April 19th
  • entries must be signed (if you don't have a Blogger account) so I know who to announce as the winner
  • one entry per person, please
  • you qualify if you're not related to either me of Vicki
  • this giveaway is open to international contestants
  • You must check back here to see if you've won. I will not hunt you down! Seriously.

The winner will be chosen via random number generator and posted on Monday, April 20.

Okay, start posting!

New cover; excerpt

I've just gotten permission to share the almost-final cover for My Soul to Take. The cover art and fonts are final, I believe, and this is the cover that'll be going on the bound galleys, which is why I can share it. But the art dept. is going to continue tweaking one of the artistic elements (which I'm really excited about) before the book actually goes to print. So this should change a little bit before you see it on the shelf.

So, where and when can you see the cover?
  • Today, on my discussion group, of course. I'll be posting the whole thing there very shortly.
  • Tonight, in my quarterly newsletter, where I'll be showing off just the front cover.
  • Monday here on the blog (because I can blog from my phone), where I'll post the front cover only.
  • Next week (mid-week, because I'll be away from my computer until then) on my website, when I'll post the whole thing for all to see.

If you're not a member of the discussion group but would like to be, click here.

If you don't get the newsletter but would like to, click here.

And since the discussion group has had the exclusive Prey excerpt for several days now, it's time for everyone else to get a peek. Just click on the appropriate button in the widget below. The excerpt will open in a new window, in PDF format.

[Note: this excerpt is from the end of the second chapter of Prey. Marc and Faythe have just been reunited, and are part of a caravan escorting Manx through the free zone to her trial, though they won't stay for the actual hearing.]

I'm not as skilled as Jeri in the widget department, but for my first attempt at a multiple-page widget, I'm pretty pleased. If you like it and want to share, feel free. ;-)

Florida schedule

I leave two weeks from today for the Romantic Times Booklover's Convention, which is being held in Orlando this year. I'm so excited! This will be my fourth RT, and I look forward to it every year, and I've finally got this year's schedule put together.

[Note: if you're in the area and want to meet your favorite authors but don't want to attend (or pay for) the entire convention, skip down to the bottom of the list. The mass signing is open to non-conference attendees for five dollars.]

Here's where I'll be while I'm in Orlando:

Come listen as authors talk about how hot is too hot in YA and where the line has to be drawn. Captain: Richelle Mead Panelists: Caitlin Kittredge, Marianne Mancusi, Melissa Marr, TOR Editor Heather Osborn, Rachel Vincent

Teaser

Okay, I think I've figured out how to post the Prey video. This is our first real attempt, and it's really too short to be a true trailer, so I'm calling it a teaser. Hope it teases... ;-)

To watch in HD, click the HD button, the pause until it loads completely. That way it won't pause or hitch.

Prey excerpt

Well, I'd hoped to post the video teaser for Prey today, but frankly, I don't know how to work it. It's all done, but I can't get it posted without a little help from #1, who made it. Okay, a lot of help from #1. We'll get it figured out tonight. I swear. ;-)

In the mean time... I just posted the link to the Prey excerpt on my discussion forum, in the "Prey" thread. The link is on right, if you're reading this on Blogger or LJ, in case anyone feels motivated to join. ;-)

The excerpt is from the end of chapter two. Faythe and Marc have just been reunited, and they're part of the crew escorting Manx and her new baby to her trial. (But they don't stay for the trial. I'm didn't want to write two trial books in a row.)

Right now, the discussion board is the only place to access the excerpt, but it'll go out in my newsletter as soon as I have the cover for My Soul to Take. (I'm trying to avoid sending two newsletters in rapid succession. ;-)) Then it'll go up on my website. Hopefully no more than a week from now.

But if you can't wait that long, you know how to get it now! Like my other excerpts, it's a PDF, so you'll need some version of Adobe to view it. Hope you like it!

A winner, and a plotting discussion

The winner of the Books and Bunnies contest is...

Sara Muller, who said:
I wrote a thirty-one page research paper about the industry and company I would like to work for after graduation for my Business Communications class last semester, and I got an A.

Sara, please email me (rachelATrachelvincentDOTcom) with your full name and email address, and I'll put your prizes in the mail.

Thanks to everyone who entered, and I was impressed by many, many of the accomplishments you guys told me about. And, frankly, humbled by some as well. ;-)

In other news, we're telling the world how we plot (or why we don't) this week over at FFF, so click on over there to read the last few posts. Everyone seems to have a different method!

A call for ideas

I need help. Here's the deal:

Prey, the fourth book in my Shifters series comes out on July 1, less than three months from now, and My Soul to Take, the first in my (young adult) Soul Screamers series comes out a scant month later, on August 1.

Awesome, right? Back to back releases.

Well, not quite.

The problem is that I have no idea at all how to properly promote two releases so close together. Especially in this case, because they're not in the same series, so I can't really push them both with the same effort. I'm not even really reaching out to the same audience, though I'd be thrilled if my adult readers like Kaylee and her stories as well as my werecat world.

I want to be able to devote all of my time, energy, and promotional budget to each of them, but I'm finally starting to understand how truly impossible that is.

I don't even know which cover to use as my profile picture on LJ, My Space, Facebook, etc... Okay, right now that's a no-brainer, because I don't actually have the YA cover yet. But I'm told that it's coming. Very, very soon. On My Space, I can rotate covers, as I'm doing now with a couple of others. But that only solves a very small part of my problem.

So, I turn to you, my dear blog readers. Ideas? Any- and everything. I'm listening, and hoping for suggestions from both writers and readers. Anyone been in this situation, with back-to-back non-related releases? Anyone been in a similar situation? Anyone just inspired by the very idea? ;-)

Oh, and while I'm on the subject, if you're a reviewer, and you would like to do an interview, Q&A, review, contest, or host a guest blog in association with either of my summer releases, drop me a line. I'm making out my on-line schedule. ;-)
