And...it's done! [Edited]

Ten minutes ago, I turned in revisions for MY SOUL TO STEAL. While I was working on the manuscript, the changes/tightening didn't feel like that big a deal. But in retrospect, looking back over everything I did and what those changes meant for the story, I think this may have been the biggest (or at least, the most profound) set of revisions I've done for any novel yet, except for Prey. (Those of you who've been reading my blog for a while will know that Prey was restructured with a completely new main plot during the revisions process).

The problem as I see it was this: the new character, Sabine, took over the novel. I have to admit, I love her. [Edit: I love Kaylee too, of course. No new character would make me love Kaylee any less, and since we see everything from Kaylee's perspective, the series obviously wouldn't work--or be the series it is now--without her.] She's Kaylee's perfect foil. I don't want to say too much about her until people have had a chance to read My Soul To Keep (which Amazon tells me is already shipping), but I will say that the plot (and just about everything else) took a back seat to Sabine before these revisions.

Sabine's still a force to be reckoned with. Kaylee doesn't know what to do with her, and ultimately, no one else's advice can help her with that. She's going to have to handle Sabine on her own. And she does it beautifully. But thanks to my editor's wonderful advice and thought-provoking questions, I was able to bring the plot forward and to really dig deeply into the characters themselves.

Kaylee has changed, in large part due to what happened in MSTKeep. And she's not the only one. But I think she's better for it, even if that means that the pieces of her life don't fit so neatly around her any more. Not as neatly as they used to, anyway.

I think the thing I'm most pleased with about these revisions is one particular moment near the end, during a very important, plot-driving argument (more of a showdown) between Kaylee and Sabine. In the original, Kaylee got mad and did something I needed her to do, to propel the plot. But my editor pointed out in her notes that Kaylee's action in that spot was out of character for her.

And she was right. So my challenge was to get her back into character without losing that plot propulsion. And that was very difficult. But in the end, I did it, by digging deeper into Kaylee's character and letting her learn from experience. And by taking some advice Ally Carter gave to a room full of people last July, and probably didn't even know I was paying attention to. ;-)

The result is that Kaylee's actions are now just as meaningful as they were before, but now they fit her better, and they're smarter. And possibly even more effective.

So, I'm pleased.

Hopefully tomorrow I'll have a new My Soul To Keep themed wallpaper to show off and a new contest to announce. That's my goal, anyway, as I work on line/copy edits for ALPHA.

Also, I've heard that MSTKeep is now shipping from several places, but if you happen to find it on an actual shelf, I'd love to have a picture...!

Congrats, that's so exciting and I love hearing about how stories change--sooo excited for June 1st!

I don't mean any offense by this because I really love your writing but with all this talk about Sabine and how she is so awesome, it's kind of turning me off of the future novels in this series. I really love Kaylee and with you being so down on her I feel like I won't like her either. I can understand liking writing a new character but if you don't love your main character how am I supposed to feel about liking Kaylee? I don't know if I am getting my point across but it might be nice if you could make people more excited about Kaylee herself because we see the novels through her eyes. Once again I don't want you to take this badly, I really do love and buy your books.

thats great that you were able to get her back into acting like herself. Whoo hoo ;0 )

Anonymous, I'm not sure what I said to make you think that I don't love Kaylee. Of course I love Kaylee. And Sabine's addition to the series wouldn't mean anything, if we weren't watching Kaylee deal with her.

Kaylee is smart, and loyal, and strong, and funny in her moments. I do love her. And I'm by no means done writing about her. ;-)

Congrats on the finish. I really need to get those books and read because they all sound great.

In answer to what gave me the idea that you don't like Kaylee: its just whenever you talk about the new novel (on twitter, blogger, message boards) you usually just mention Sabine but lately I haven't really seen any mentions of Kaylee. I just kind of felt she was getting left behind.

I too love Kaylee and hope her role/character isn't dimished. Congrats on finsihing the edits! I only wish it would be available sooner!

I might just drag my kids to the bookstore tomorrow to see if I can find MSTK. I can harldy wait to read it.

No, Kaylee's role won't be dimished. It couldn't be. She's the narrator. She's the star, no matter what else happens or who is added to the cast. :)

I am excited to see how Kaylee deals with an issue/character that opposes her directly. So far Kaylee has jumped in the middle of events that she can help out with and feels responsible for because of her ability as a bean sidhe. Bringing a character into the series that Kaylee has no choice but to deal with is going to be great. Whether or not she wants to, she won’t have a choice but to make decisions about what road to take in life. I have to say, I’m excited!

A couple of things. First, good for you for allowing positive and negative posts and addressing them all with grace.
Second, Can you please consider letting us in on the way that these stories (especially PREY) would have read? I would be so interested to see alternate scenes or endings for any of your novels.
I am a member of the Pride, maybe you can post it there for all of us loyals. Or maybe not, I'm sure you would have your reasons for wanting these things to stay our of our hot little hands.

Anyway, something to think about ;o)

Cant wait until 6/1/2010!

Im really anxious to find out who Sabine is. But we dont actually get introduced to her until My Soul to Steal, correct? Anyway, Im really looking forward to it! And i cant wait for My Soul to Keep. Congrats with the book.

OMG!!! Congrats on the finish, Rachel! I can't wait to see what happens in MSTS, Sabine sounds like she's going to be a tough challenge for Kaylee. So excited and I'm literally bouncing in my seat as I write this, hahas! :P Anyways, I'm sure whatevaer happens, its gonna be a great read, just like your other books!! Just read finish MSTK and it was incredible! LOVE the Soul Screamers series and especially Kaylee!
P.s: You're awesome and SUCH an amazing writer!

omg i just finished my soul to keep and i love it!my fave out of the three books so far!!i was kinda hoping there will be more going on between nash, kaylee and alec!and i really like how u craeted the romance between nash and kaylee as they're building up their relationship instead of loving each other for god's sake..it seemed more real to me(:
