Girl Power!
“Run!” I gasped. “It’s right behind me.”
“I don’t hear any…”
When he didn’t move, I let myself collide with him, collapsing into his
arms like beauty running from the beast. That way he was too busy holding me up
to go for his gun. But I wasn’t. When he stood me up, I grabbed the 9 mm from
his waistband—my third capture in half an hour. Not bad for a girl,
huh?
One of the songs from my playlist for this scene is "I'm Just A Girl" by No Doubt. And actually, if Faythe had her own anthem, this would probably be it (though there are a couple of others close in the running). Because like her or not (and *gasp* not everyone does!) it can't be denied that from the moment she stepped onto the first page, Faythe was kicking a#@ and taking names. For herself. She doesn't let anyone else fight her battles, and even when she needs help (and can be forced to admit it), it's not because she's a girl. It's because she's only (mostly) human, and no one can force a revolution alone.
And no, before anyone complains, Faythe has no problem using other people's ignorance and underestimation of her (as a woman) against them. Just like most of the men she's up against have no problem using their greater size and strength against her. Her world is brutal, and the only way to survive is to use the weapons at your disposal. All of them.
My favorite lines from "I'm Just A Girl":
Don't you think I know
Exactly where I stand
This world is forcing me
To hold your hand
Cause I'm just a girl, little 'ol me
Don't let me out of your sight
I'm just a girl, all pretty and petite
So don't let me have any rights
and
I'm just a girl, living in captivity
Your rule of thumb
Makes me worry some
I'm just a girl, what's my destiny?
What I've succumbed to
Is making me numb

It always surprises me when you say some people don't like Faythe... but to each their own! Love the anthem! Can't wait for ALPHA!!! :-D
Thanks for the mini excerpt!! LOVE "I'm Just a Girl" for Faythe. I think that was one of No Doubt's best albums...brings back lots of memories :D
That song has been one of my favourites for a long time. I love it and it really does fit Faythe perfectly.
Also, great excerpt. You gotta work with what you have. *g*
I. Love. Faythe.
Thanks for another snippet of Alpha, I am absolutely dying to read it. It is one of my most anticipated reads of the year!!!
I know why some people don't like Faythe. It's hard to admit, but we see her faults and we have them too. She is also one killer woman and that should over ride her mistakes.
This is one of the reasons I love Faythe so much-- but I think also because she isn't afraid to lean on her friends and family when she needs it-- at least after the first book:) I too am surprised that she rubs some female readers the wrong way. I love her just the way she is, and see that she isn't perfect but who the hell is? LOL
It always makes me chuckle when people despise Faythe so and can still enjoy the book. I like Faythe if she was perfect she would be boring.
Dude, your exceprts from music are bringing me back lol
Faythe is "flawed" and she should be or you would not have such a large fan base for the series. I am counting down the minutes and this was a perfect little teaser from Alpha, thanks Rachel!!
Gwen Stefani and No Doubt coined some perfect words for the theme song or anthem as it were and your use of them for this book works!
jackie b ^_^
I just finished Shift the other day! Whoa. I'm looking forward to reading Alpha- love the characters and the world you've built! I really like Faythe- I think she is the perfect balance of girl and bada$$! Thanks for sharing your talents!
