In the middle of the night...

Last night, I stayed up too late and when I went to bed, instead of succumbing to sleep, my mind started writing a story. Something completely unconnected to anything I've written before. It was really weird. The lines just started playing in my head, along with the images. So I decided I'd better write them down.

At one am, I got up and connected my Mac keyboard to my iPad, so I wouldn't have to fire up my computer. (One advantage of my iPad is that it's instantly there and ready to go.) Exactly an hour later, I had exactly 2000 words. Again, it was really weird.

I was so tired while I was writing that one of the characters evidently named herself after a minor from Fallout 3.

I have no idea if this story will go anywhere. Goodness knows I don't have time for another novel right now. So maybe it'll be a short story. Not that I have time for that either, unless I'm willing to give up an hour of sleep in the middle of every night. But at least for that hour, I was kind of obsessed by this idea, this girl, and the incredibly tough choice she's facing. So maybe we'll meet again, this middle-of-the-night story and I. Or maybe not.

To enter this week's giveaway, leave me a comment telling me who the last author you met in person was, or which author you'd most like to meet, if you've never met one. The last author I met was Melissa de la Cruz. She signed a book for me too!

I have only met some local authors of small niche books (e.g. Victorian table settings), no one big-time. I would love to meet Elizabeth Peters. She is the author I have loved for the longest number of years, and I have such respect for her Egyptology background!

I have never met an author before, but I am going to the Kelley Armstrong signing in a couple of weeks!

You really must get a passport and come to Canada Rachel! ;)

The last author that I met was Christopher Moore. The author I would most like to meet is Leonard Cohen.

I've never met an author but i would love to meet Holly Black, her books are so awesome i d love to pick her brain

I met Kelley Armstrong. She was super nice and signed all the books I brought :-). And she let me take a picture of us together. And she answered my question during the Q&A. Sigh.

The last author I met in person was Kelley Armstrong at the RT convention in Los Angeles.

The author I haven't met but would most like to is Stephen King who I would make a complete idiot of myself in front of blathering on an on about his greatness. How I'm his biggest fan, etc.

On second thought, I don't know if I'd want to turn into that psycho fan in front of him, so maybe not...

i´ve never met an author, but i really wanna meet You and Richelle Mead, maybe in the future :)

I would love to meet you and Maria V Snyder because I adore every single book that I have read.

The last author I met in person was actually you and Kelley Armstrong, when you two were on that tour together. Each of you signed a book for me, and I treasure them. I hope to get a chance to meet K.A. Applegate and Michael Grant at this year's LA Book Festival Of Books. :)

The last author I met was..Becca Fitzpatrick when did a UK tour in October/November last year! She was *so* nice! <3

I'd LOVE to meet John Green sometime in the (near) future.. :)

I met Richelle Mead in December and Brea Dispain in March - I wish I could meet you!

I get like that too. I have a food blog and sometimes I find myself unable to sleep because I am mentally writing what I want to say in my next post. I usually end up getting up, firing up the computer and typing what is on my mind, otherwise I end up laying awake in bed for hours. I have never met an author before. I don't really have a specific person that I would like to meet because I would like to meet the authors from all the books that I own. I don't live close to any book stores so I have never had the chance to go to a book signing. I think that it would be neat to meet the person behind the pages. I have been unable to get my hands on your Shifters series but hopefully I will get my hands on them soon.

I agree I would love to meet Stephen King. But I have no idea what I would do or say if that happened. I would probably be in shock.

Living in Switzerland and reading (almost) only books by English-speaking authors, I have never been lucky enough to meet one. However, I would really love to meet Melissa Marr or Sarah Rees Brennan. Even though it's very likely I wouldn't be able to really get a word out and just grin at them like some silly fool ^^

I've only met one author. Melissa De La Cruz. I live in Kansas so authors don't usually come to this neck of the woods. Too bad!! I'd love to meet many more. So for now, I just call up indie stores and order signed copies. The best I can do! :)

The last author I met in person was Richelle Mead, but probably the most fun was Rachel Caine. I say that because it was a complete surprise.

I was searching the romance section for good paranormals, picking up an Anya Bast book and the next thing I know Rachel Caine is there telling me it's a good call. Just a random bookstore meeting. I hadn't even realized we lived in the same city. Definitely a day-making moment.

Well, given where I live.....it goes without saying that I've never met an author before. One of these days hopefully I will when I travel....I'm hoping to go to LA next year!!

Rachel, I'd really like to met you as I love your work! I would also like to met JR Ward cause she's another awesome writer. Also, as Stephanie Laurens, her books, got me into reading (I just love her), I'd really like to met her!

The last author I met was Kim Harrison. She brought her husband along on the tour and they were the friendliest couple! I love meeting the authors I enjoy reading. It's fun to hear all the different perspectives on writing.

I've never met an author in person but I did get a very nice email from Kelley Armstrong when I had a long stay in hospital. My boyfriend emailed her saying it would really cheer me up and it did! So I would love to meet her in person one day and say thank you. Would also love to meet J. K. Rowling as Harry Potter has gotten me through some very tough times. Nice to have you back Rachel!

I've never met an author but I have a decent sized list of those I'd like to meet.

Unfortunatley where I am, I'd never get the chance to meet any of the authors I want to meet cause none of you ever come to Northern Ireland!

I'd love to meet lots of authors, sadly you guys don't really tour in Holland that often ;)

iqb99@yahoo.com

I love to read so authors for me are like big celebrities so I think that if I met them I wouldn't be able to say anything :P.
I woild like to met a lot of authors but if I have to choose one it would be Kelley Armstrong

The last author I met was Cassandra Clare. She is one of my favorites so it was very cool. I would love to meet JK Rowling though.

The last author I met was Kelley Armstrong - I'm in Canada on a student budget so I have to wait for the authors to come to me. It is a rare and wonderful thing and totally love it! It was an awesome experience and I truly appreciate Ms. Armstrong's efforts!

The last author I met was James Patterson. He signed book 5 of the Maximum Ride series, Max, which is one of my fav books ever. I really would like to meet Julie Kagawa (Iron Fey) or Rachel Vincent! I love both their books and blogs! :)

I've never met an author in person but i would love to met you of course and Richelle Mead or Cassandra Clare. All 3 authors introduced me to my favorite character of all time andi would love to see if that sassyness comes from inside them or not.

I've only met a local author of my island Patrick CHAMOISEAU two years ago

I think I'm going to meet Meg Cabot on the 30th! I'm so excited! It'll be my first book signing!!!

Well, the only author I've ever met was Earl Sewell, and a few others at a convention. But I'd love to meet Richelle Mead.

I've never met an author before so I'd be super excited to meet one, even if it was just a simple signing. More than new shoes excited!

I have a whole list of authors I'd want to meet. Right now, I'm reading Archangel's Consort, so I'd love to meet Nalini Singh.

Unfortunately, Reno isn't a typical destination of the authors that I love to read so I guess I'll stick to following my favorite authors on Twitter and facebook. :)

Sadly, I have never met an author =/ Well, not that I can remember anyway lol (Just got back from school and my brain is a little fried so I cant even think lol). But I'd like to meet Kimberly Derting, Cassandra Clare, Rachel Vincent (AKA you, lol), Stacey Kade, and Rick Riordan.

I have never met an author before but if I could I would meet J R Ward. She seems like such an awesome person and also really hilarious. I would also love to get some deets on Qhuinn and Blay if I possibly could :)

I've never met an author but I think the ones I'd most like to meet are you, Cassandra Clare, Richelle Mead, and because they both crack me up on their blogs and twitter (and I like their books) Kiersten White and Maggie Stiefvater.

jlhsperry624@hotmail.com

I met Brent Weeks, author of The Night Angle Trillogy and Black Prism when he came to Orlando to do a book signing. He was warm and it was truly a pleasure to meet him. He signed the book and my SONY Reader. :)

Actually the first time I met any author was last Saturday when I went to the RT Book Convention. Which was great because I got to meet a lot of authors I like reading from, and yes, I met you too, but you were not the last author I had spoken to (you were actually second to last). The last author I actually spoke to was Simone Elkeles. I would love to meet LJ Smith to get my Night World series signed because they are just so awesome.

You connect a keyboard to your smart phone? Do a lot of people do that?
I met Catherine Asaro last year. Among other things, she's a physicist, a SIGMA adviser to the government on security issues, and a rock and jazz singer. In other words, she's a female version of Buckaroo Banzai.

I haven't met any authors in person yet but I would most likely to meet is Julie Kagawa..because she's my fave author so far :)

I run local literary readings, so I've met quite a few. But the last young adult author I met was Maria V. Snyder, of the "Study Series." Awesome person, and very open to discussing craft, which is critical to have among writers.

I have never had the chance to meet one. But I want to meet you (Rachel Vincent), Melissa de la Cruz, Richelle Mead and James Rollins.

I met Melissa Marr and Becca Fizpatrick in Bologna a couple of weeks ago! It was great, for the first time in my life I had the chance to meet some of the authors I love!

The last author I met was Melissa de la Cruz at a conference. I look forward to meeting you at BEA this year because unfortunately the line last year was insane! :)

The last author I met was Cassandra Clare. But besides her I've only met Charlaine Harris, so...

I met Annie Proulx a few weeks ago and I'm meeting SIR Terry Pratchett on Sunday. Am mega excited - I've never met a Sir Anyone before.

I'm also hoping to meet Cassandra Clare when she comes to the Sydney Writers Festival next month. Maybe you can come out here for it next year? We need a bigger Urban Fantasy representation.

The last author I met was Joe Finder. He gave a great talk at my school, and I had a lovely time meeting his wife as well.

I haven't had the opportunity to meet any authors. There's not a whole lot of action in Chattanooga, TN authorwise. But I would love to meet Cassandra Clare. I think she'd be a hoot!

Ooh that was actually Maria V. Snyder for me! Last week my mom and I--she didn't want me going alone--drove over 6 hours to see her! She was "somewhat" close to Missouri and we drive around that many hours when we visit my aunt. It was really fun!

Julie Kagawa and Mara Purnhagen were also there with 3 other debut authors! But I got to hang out with Maria afterwards, it was really fun!

jessbess2505[at]yahoo[dot]com

I've never had the chance to meet an author in person. I would love to meet you, Richelle Meade, Kim Harrison, or Carrie Vaughn.

Last author i met was Anthony horowitz(OMG AWESOME!!!!)
an author i REALLY BADLY WANT TO MEET is Rachel Hawkins and Julie Kagawa.

The last author we met was Carrie Ryan, who was super sweet and eloquent and funny.

Well, I haven't met any authors yet (I live in Romania and no one ever comes here*sigh*), so I have a long list of authors I'd like to meet. Kim Harrison would be on top of that list - I'd get all nervous and fangirly if I had the chance to see her. And... wouldn't you like to come to Romania? It's pretty cool here and we are nice, welcoming people.:)

I would love to meet you (duh!) and also Cassandra Clare. She's such an amazing author and I'm extremely happy that the protagonist from MI and I share the same first name. (makes my friends jealous) ;D

I'm meeting Meg Cabot next week! I can't wait!

I just met Stephanie Perkins this past weekend. It was great! She signed several books for me and my friends and was super nice about answering my questions.

christine.dunbar(at)gmail.com

i would LOVE to meet Chloe Neill who is the author of the Chicagoland Vamps! I've never met an author before because I'm from the UK and most of my fave authors live in the US :(

While I don't remember meeting any authors so far, I would love to meet either Piers Anthony or Raymond E Feist sometime.

My first and only time meeting an author was during the Harlequin Teen Trio Tour. I met Julie Kagawa, Maria v. Snyder, and Mara Purnhagen. There were also three debut authors, Julia Karr, Sarah Bennett Wealer, and Lisa Roeker. It was such a great experience and now I have some great authotoaster have added to my collection of books!

I would like to meet Sherrilyn Kenyon. Thanks for the great giveaway.

I had the pleasur eof meeting Laurell K Hamilton in Las Vegas and in June I am going to have the most awesome opprotunity to meet Vicki Pettersson.
I would very much love to meet all the authors whose books I read in person but I feel that I have already met most of them in some way on facebook. I think that it's great that you all come to facebook and share with us.

I have been lucky enough to live near Seattle so we get some really awesome authors coming through. The last author I meet was Patricia Briggs, I will be seeing Cassandra Clare and Holley Black on Thursday and then Jean M. Auel on Tuesday (super excited for this).

The author who I would love to meet, but I don't think it will ever happen would be JK Rowling and Stephanie Meyer.

That's so cool, that the story came to you so vividly in the emiddle of the night! Too cool!

The last author I met was Lauren Oliver when she came to the UK to promote the release of Delirium. Her UK publishers actually arranged a book blogger only event, where she could mingle and chat and drink cocktails with all of us, rather than sit behind a table talking/signing books. She signed too, but she spoke with everyone less formally than at a usual author event. She came and sat at my table with some of the book bloggers I know personally and we all had a good chat about our favourite animals, movies, and her books. Was so good!

Last author I met was Howard Jacobson. Incredibly funny. I met Kelley Armstrong recently also.

The last author I met was Richelle Mead. No, wait, I lie. It was David Whitley, and he was really cool. Oh, scrambled brain of mine. :)

I think the last author I met in person was Khaled Hosseini - such a nice guy!! His son was adorable! I'd love to meet Kelley Armstrong since I've gotten addicted to her books and Maria V. Snyder (such a boss!) - or even you!! Too many authors spread over way too much space and time :(

I would so love to meet Jeaniene Frost -sigh-

I love her books and I'm a hugehugehuge fan! I've never met an author before, so I really jealous of everyone who has :L

The last author I met was at a signing and it was Bruce Campbell touring for his book If Chins Could Kill. It was 10 or 11 years ago. Yeah, I don't get to many signings.

The first and last author i met was Richelle Mead :)

The last author I met was Larry Heinemann. He's one of my creative writing professors.

Being in Australia, not many International Author's Visit my City. Australian Author's i have met: Andy Griffiths & Hazel Edwards. both are Children's Authors. as no YA's seem to Visit.
Someone i would love to meet would be Virginia Andrews, but she is no longer alive so perhaps V.C Andrews, if not them, then George R. R. Martin, And Yourself of course!! ;)

Well, my mother is an author, but, as she writes books about 20th century history that I have no intent in reading, I don't think that counts. However, I have met Jack Heath.

I never got to meet any of my own fave authors. I've met several before when I take my daughter to signings. I don't get to read too much, so the next author I would like to see is Rachel of course!

I haven't met any authors before...but I'd love to meet Suzanne Collins because I L-O-V-E-D The Hunger Games and thought it was an awesome trilogy!

af.love78(at)gmail(dot)com

I have never met an author before, but i would love to meet John Green :)

I have never gotten the chance to meet an author in person. Our review site has the pleasure of interviewing several of my favorite authors. I would love to meet any of my favorite authors. I could not pick just one!

I actually met and got to interview Kelley Armstrong last September and it was the best experience. She's amazing- very down to earth!

Well I actually met you at the RT Convention, along with Cassandra Clare, Carrie Ryan, Sophie Jordan, Kimberly Derting, Kelley Armstrong, the list goes. I doubt you remember me since you signed so many people's books, but I brought My Soul to Take for you to sign and you mentioned how you wish you'd asked for them to supply those as well as your newest one.

If dead authors count, I'd love to meet Shakespeare, but since that's impossible I'm going to go with... Stephenie Meyer. I actually would like to meet her more for her adult book called The Host, which is amazing by the way, if you haven't read it.

Anyway, I love your YA books and can't wait for If I Die to be released! :)

Nicole

nicoleloveskyle2@aim.com

Hmm who would I like to meet? You! I'd love to meet you but I can't since I live in Australia. :(

I never got to meet any of my favorite authors. Kind of a bummer too. I would love to meet you though Rachel!

I would love to meet Laini Taylor, author of Lips Touch Three Times. She writes YA fantasy, has a hubby and an 18 month old little girl. It's difficult to imagine how she manages! She's also an artist with a full head of hot pink hair! Her blog is awesome, as well, with writing tips, pics of her family, and silly fun stuff going on around Portland. A very down to earth person. She seems approachable, kind, friendly and not the least bit egotistical. I'm genuinely happy for her success, and don't mind spending money on her books.

Rachel, I downloaded Reaper on my Kindle because it was free. Having never read your books, I wanted to check it out. AMAZING!!!! Definitely hooked now. Definitely don't mind buying your novels either.

My favorite quote:

"When I have a little money, I buy books; and if I have any left, I buy food and clothes."

I've never met a author but I'd love to met you, Nora Roberts, Debbie Macomber and Rachel Caine! I'm a big fan of all of you!

I have never met an author before, but if I had a chance I would like to meet Richelle mead, L.J Smith,Stephen King and I would like to meet you :).

The last author that I met was Kim Harrison at a book signing. I think it is very bizarre to meet authors because they are such (including you) huge celebrities in my brain. I feel like I have tapped into a huge part of them as a person via reading their books, and they know nothing about me. I turn into a nerdy, star-struck preteen- and I'm 28 years old. Perhaps you will come to my area soon enough, and I can be a nerdy preteen to you as well :)

I haven't met an author yet. But I have a top five that I would most want to meet.

You (Rachel)
PC Cast
Nalini Singh
Gena Showalter
Christine Feehan

Thanks for the contest Rachel!

I went to Cassandra Clare's Clockwork Angel book signing and found it very interesting and enjoyable. I would love to meet you if you came to my home town. I have loved the first two books of the Soul Screamers series. I read them within a day each. Tonight I ordered the next two, and will soon read Reaper and My Soul to Lost as well. I would love to look at these foreign editions, especially the one in French, since I take French.

I've never met an author coz none of them ever come to Australia :(. But i really wanna meet James Patterson coz he's a great author :D

The last author I met was Tamora Pierce at Wellesley College when the sci-fi/fantasy club brought her in.

I met Kylie Chan at a book signing. Kylie is a fantastic Australian Author who writes urban fantasy based on Chinese mythology. Kylie was very sweet. She was just as excited to meet us, her fans, as we were to meet her.
