When I first started writing novels, back in 2005, about a year and a half before my first sale, I typically wrote 4,000+ words a day. Every day. I wrote my first three novels (355,000+ words) in ten months. I was fast. Not super-human-fast (Rachel Caine holds that title in my head), but pretty fast. And I was consistent.
I was also...not as good a writer as I am now. Seriously. I didn't even know that dialogue from two different people should go in two separate paragraphs. I didn't know when to start a new paragraph. I didn't know that you didn't have to show every single moment of the main character's day. Every single day. I was new, and inexperienced, but here's the thing: I was having fun. Writing was my recreation. My me-time. My escape.
There was no burnout. No carpel tunnel or neck aches from sitting in the wrong position. I looked forward to every single moment I spent writing.
Now writing is work. It's my day job. I still love it, and I know I'm one of very few people in the world who get to do what they love for a living. I wouldn't give it up for anything. But the shine has worn off. I've spent too many years doing nothing but writing and the related, non-writing parts of the job. (And by the way, if you're not a writer and you don't live with a writer, you probably can't IMAGINE how much time those parts take up.)
The thing about writing for a living is that there's no way to leave your work at work, because you work at home. You live with the work. Until you've met your deadline (and mine overlap one another all year long), you feel guilty for doing anything other than work. You get emails about work twenty-four hours a day, from all different timezones. Yes, you can let them wait, but then they pile up until your inbox resembles one of those over-the-top cartoon monsters from an episode of Scooby-Doo. And it WILL eat you alive, once it catches you. And it will catch you.
The stress caught up to me a few months ago. Nothing catastrophic. No drama. I just discovered that I didn't always love sitting down to write anymore. And I'd lost all perspective. I couldn't tell whether what I was writing was any good anymore. And finally, I figured out that all I really needed was some free time. Time spent doing nothing in particular, with no expectations put on me, even from myself. (And the most stressful of expectations usually come from yourself.) But my deadlines (which are always a good thing, because they mean you're employed) don't leave time for a vacation.
So now I'm trying something new. I got the idea from Jeri Smith-Ready, on Twitter, though she probably has no idea that she inspired me. Instead of sitting down every day knowing I have to write between 3,000 and 4,000 words before I can go to bed, a prospect which stresses me out lately, I've started tackling my daily writing goal in short spurts. (Those publishable words, btw, are much harder to come by than those just-for-fun words I could slap on the page back in 2005.)
I'm doing several 1 hr/1,000 word sprint sessions per day. Yesterday, I did three and a half of them, and wrote more than 3,700 words. Yup, I did my entire wordcount goal in 3.5 hours. Which left plenty of time for laundry, a mile on the treadmill, and four (count them--FOUR) episodes of Firefly, which I discovered only last week.
So far, this plan has been working out perfectly. I meet my goal. I have free time. I am not stressed. I think it's psychological. I don't have to write 3,000 words. I only have to write 1,000. Then I do it again, after lunch, or a TV show, or some other kind of non-work break. Whatever the reason, so far it's working. And the key to that, by the way, seems to be knowing what needs to be written before you sit down with your timer.
Okay, that's it for the work update today. Now, I really need to get rid of some of the foreign editions taking up space on my shelf. If you want one from the list below, leave me a comment telling me what your passion is. What do you do to relax, and would you want to do it for a living if you could (assuming you're not already)?
I will draw one winner at random on Friday, and that winner may choose from the books below. Recently added to the list are three copies of the UK version of My Soul To Keep.

Hey Rachel, My passion is reading, ive entertained the idea of writing but i think it's best left to the professionals. I recently started book blogging and i absolutely love rambling on about books ive read so its perfect. Ii don't know if id want to make a career out of a passion because id be afraid of losing that passion. great article. I'd love to win a copy of the Austrailian My Soul To Steal. I <3 Nash!!

I am with Tristan, reading is my passion. If I could do anything in the entire world I think that I would either want to be a book buyer for a big company or just a full-time reviewer (wouldn't it be amazing to sit back and read all of your favourite authors books day in and day out?). If not, I would be a-okay with being an anthropology professor (which at this point seems more realistic)... ;)

Glad you figured things out:)
My passion? Reading...I figured this out 2 years ago before which I was allergic to books. Now I just can't stop.
To relax sometimes, I walk over to my first floor apartment window and start counting cars of some type (I know it sounds wierd)and try to achieve some count which is not that hard...that way I feel like I've done something.
Being a student,I've realized what we have to go through when we have a "not so great" teacher....so when I grow up, I want to become a teacher beacuse I love to teach :) Thanks for the giveaway!
Hi I get how you have to put goals into your daily day, since you go at home. Must be hard sometimes. Have deadlines etc.
My main passion is animals. Though I can`t find work with it, and I am not allowed to have animals were I live now, so my cat lives at my dad`s place :( It`s not fun. Though hoping one day to find the job of my dreams. Right now I am just working as a receptionist at a hotel. And in my sparetime doing my second passion, reading :)
I would love to enter for a copy of UK My soul to Take.
Since I just read Stray and going on Rouge, in Norwegian. Stray was one of my favourite books so far :) You did a great job.
Keep up the good work :)

I'm going to state a few things.
My passion is reading, I love to read. To be drawn in completely to this amazing written world is fantastic.
Soccer I love playing it. It is so much fun and a great way to get some of the anger/annoyance of the day out of my system. I wish at times I would have trained more to be able to do more things with it, but at least I still play for fun.
What I wish I could do amazingly would be photography or art. I want to take a photography class so I can learn how to take artist photos since I can't draw very well. I would like a creative outlet.
I read and cook to relax. I still haven't figured out what my dream job would be... probably anything with numbers.
Definitely make sure that you take some "me time" for yourself. Usually to relax I listen to music or I read a book. Both of them help me to forget the world around me and I just focus on the words. I am still not sure what I would like to do as a career. I love cooking, animals and reading, so maybe I will write a cookbook for animals. (~_^)
Cool post! I love that you share your process on your blog. I am an attorney (I represent whistleblowers who are reporting fraud on the federal government) and that is EXACTLY how I get through briefs that I don't want to do. :) My passions are my family, my job (which involves catching the bad guys) and writing, which I have been doing a lot more of in the last year.
I love doing the #1k1hr bursts too. I found out about those because of Jeri as well. My passion is writing. I used to do it to relax, but once I got serious about it, it did start to fade with the shininess. I experiment with other genres sometimes and that brings back the newness. I'm now contracted for a couple of books. Hooray! Anyways, I'd love a copy of Finnish Stray (Kissatytto)!
I absolutely love Firefly! I wish they could have made more episodes! As for my passion, I love reading and writing. I'm an engineer so getting away from the math and science to exercise the other side of my brain through reading and writing is the best kind of relaxation/mental vacation I could ever want. I'd love to someday turn that passion into a profession.
I love to cook and bake. That's what I do to relax. Plus it has some benefits :) Just last night I made double peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies. YUM!! I would love to go to culinary school and become a chef. Unfortunately, there's no school near by. :(
Thanks again!

Hey Rachel!
My passion is definitely reading. If I could get paid to do it, I would. My other passion is my family. I've gone through some big changes in the last year and a half. I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, graduated with a Bachelor's degree, will graduate tomorrow with 4 certificates from a tech. school, moved 3 months ago for the first time, got married on April 30th, and started a new job in January! Without my family, I never would have made it through everything. My passion is to make sure that my close friends and family have the same strong support system that I have. I did my passion of helping people and getting to be around books all day for 6 1/2 years. I worked at a bookstore and if I could own one and still support my family, I'd drop everything I have in a second and start. Thank you for writing. It's writers like you that made my job fun :)
My Passion is reading an writing. Nothing calms me down more than a good book or sitting down and getting my feelings out with a good poem. I can't write anything symbolic full of metaphors or anything, just raw, straight to the point words. And they have to rhyme. Always. I also love to write stories, even if I never finish them. I love your books, by the way. Tod is definitely my favorite character :)
For me, the most relaxing thing to do is making jewelry. I love to bend and shape metals. And let me tell you: hitting metal with a hammer is a HUGE stress reliever!! Like most others, I also love to read. The ability to be taken into an alternate reality for a few hours and forget your own problems is almost magical. My dream job is to be an author. The work is/will be hard, yes, but I truly believe the stress can be worth it in the end.
My passion is reading. I can read for hours together and still want to read more. I've recently discovered a love for manga so i'm immersing myself in that now. If I could do this for a living I'd be in paradise.
claroxide@yahoo.co.in
I love firefly too.
I think even as a mom I get burnt out doing the same thing. I would think it would be tougher to be a writer and not having free time.
aprilmom00 at gmail dot com
I'd love to travel for a living but I figure no matter what your passion is would get old fast if you had to do it constantly with no breaks. So I'd just love to work parttime and play parttime lol.
My passion is writing. As an aspiring writer I love to write. I can't compare anything to the sensation of creating something - new world, character and etc.
Oh, I forgot. My other passion. I like making book covers (photoshop). Some day, may be, I could become a book cover designer.
Well like a lot of answers already my passion is reading! I've been an avid reader since I was 13! Getting lost in 100s of different worlds was a fave pastime of mine and it was around that time I discovered my equally second passion--writing! I wanted to write novels just as thrilling as the ones I read--of course those are totally horrible! I looked back at them and laugh so hard they are tears in my eyes!
But you live and learn! I was 13 and had no experience whatsoever, I just wrote what I felt like even if it didn't make a lick of sense!
Now, 10 years later, I've learned lots more and am trying to find myself an agent now. Getting a lot of rejections, but still trying!

Hey Rachel, very nice blog you got here! I'm a Norwegian girl living and working as a dairy farmer. I also work as a teatcher nearby our farm. To relax I actually use almost the same way that you described. I do some work, and then I do some reading, one or two chapters, then I do some work again. Sometimes, when the book gets to thrilling, I will milk some cows and read at the same time. My husband don't share my compassion about reading, and he would just shake his head =) Beside reading, I got 4 horses, and I love spending time with them. Keep up your good work, I LOVE your books! Reading the Shifters series now. Love it!!!
I love reading. I really do. It's my way of relaxing (along with watching lots and lots of tv series). If I could somehow read books all day long as a living, I would be over the moon, I think!
Oh, if it only was that easy...
-Nicole
Reading is definitely a passion of mine, so is watching TV :p Got to try Firefly!
yavampire(at)hotmail.com
Reading is my number one passion (along with watching movies/tv and expressive arts) and I would love to be a writer. I have started my first proper novel, however haven't got that far because of exams. I hope to restart it in the summer holidays after I've finnshed school.
I've many passions myself, one of which has been my career for 20+ years. One of which is new...writing.
I occasionally get that same feeling of "It's just a job" in my primary I-have-a-mortgage-to-pay career. That's usually a sign that I need to change things up. So, I may end up moving to another job where I can apply my skills to something different, and maybe learn something in the process.
In the meantime, I've been trying to follow my passion for, well, not just writing, but storytelling. I've tried film, video, video games and finally just the keyboard and screen.
Perhaps mixing it up a bit could benefit those for whom writing is 'just a job.' Graphic novels. Flash fiction/short stories. Screenplays. Theatrical scripts.
Doing that sorta stuff could definitely benefit novel writing.
It's all about finding time outside of your busy day job of writing to mix it up. That's probably familiar territory for most of us.
Hi Rachel, I have so many passions that is is difficult to choose one(and have time to do them all), I love to read, to write, recently I have taken Sowing up again and to play computer games. I would love to make a carear out of writing but i am all to aware how diffucult that is.
I love all your books :D
Mt passion is filmmaking. i love the whole process from beginning til end. I get to do everything i love everyday. i can't wait til i finish school so i can start doing what i love for money.
I'm glad you are able to make writing fun again and figured out a way to have more "me time".
I'm passionate about reading and my boyfriend. Both make me crazy happy and I don't think I could ever give up on either of them.
iqb99@yahoo.com
My passions are books and mythology, I'm just glad those two work together. :) I also have no clue what to do for a living. It's great (not really.) But I think I might dabble in writing.
Like everyone else is probably going to say, my passion is reading. It's awesome! End of story. And doing it for the rest of my life and getting paid for it would be one of the best life-styles EVER!
Well, I was GOING TO say reading, but it looks like that profession is full from what I've read in the comments, so I think I'd rather teach reading. Oh, yes. I'm an English Education major currently and I can tell you I don't love reading as much as I used to. Especially when it's not for "fun." Reading everything for class bites. But what I do love (when I've actually read the book/short story/poem) is talking about it. Finding deeper meaning in what we read, what we say, and who we are as human beings is fun for me. And when I'm sick of reading for school or I can't find my motivation, I pick up something from my "To Read" pile and enjoy myself for a few hours.
Reading is a passion.I started reading a couple of years ago during an illness to keep my mind off of it and haven't stopped.Days that I don't have time to read stress me out a bit. Another is graphic design.I love making new things and coming up with unique ideas. I would love to do that for a living.
reading is my passion, when every I'm in a bad mood, reading let's me escape my everyday reality.
What I would want to do as a living? reading and reviewing it while getting paid would be cool, or movie critic.

I totally agree with you, Rachel! I've loved writing since I was a little girl and used to be able to spit out words a mile per minute! But now that I'm aspiring to be a writer, it's... harder. I'm not as speedy because I'm trying so hard (TOO hard?) to be efficient. But no worries! I'm not giving up :)
My passion would be reading and writing, of course! To relax, I just do either of those things. I want to be a YA novelist when I grow up, but journalism is also pretty interesting. My dream job, whatever it is, has to be flexible, though, because I want to travel! :)
Thanks so much for the giveaway!
melinda.vong@hotmail.com
I'm definitely going to take that advice for my novel. It's hard when I have college stuff as well as putting the finishing touches and extra scenes that I should have added before but didn't or re-wording sentences where I wonder what the heck I was thinking. Anyway, point is, on the sequel, I'm going to give that way a try. I love your contests, btw, just in case you were wondering :)
nicoleloveskyle2@aim.com
It's a toss up between cooking and books (both reading and collecting them). The ultimate dream would be to own a bookstore/coffee shop, and a sliding ladder is a must have.
Writing is my passion, and I'm *trying* to pursue it right now. It's hard to push myself to write everyday, but I do because I can't see myself wanting to do anything else. Thanks for the giveaway!
I enjoy reading and singing, though I have been doing less singing and more reading lately. Relaxing for me is basically being very lazy, laying in my bed and watching TV. Ever since I was in third grade I wanted to be a lawyer so bad but a couple of years ago I re-evaluated this dream and realize it is not really what I want to be anymore so currently I am not sure what I want to do for a living anymore. Maybe I could be a movie critic cause no one loves watching movies more than me...;)
I luv to read, sew and screen print. If I could do any of those for a living, it would be screen printing. Something about playing with color and ink ... it's just fun.
tinaigne[at]yahoo[dot]com
My Passion lately is reading. I say lately because I just love so many things that I always switch up hehe. But I can't read for hours in a row. I usually read 30min, do something, then read again.
Because I work 16 to midnight in an hospital, I have some breaks every now and then when their arent any blood tests to run, so I read on those moments. I LOVE reading at work, more than at home actually lol go figure!
TyngaUF(a)gmail.com
I'd love to win one of those French editions to offer to my mom =)
My passion is trying to find my passion. New experiences come and go, but it's the ones that stick that you have to watch for. I still don't know what that perfect, elusive pastime is, but hopefully it will find me soon enough. In the meantime, my bookshelf keeps me company and it always offers a reprieve whenever reality gets too boring.
Firefly is awesome! I watch all the episodes and Serenity about once every 6 months. It's a lot of fun.
Okay, my passion is cooking. Lately it has been more bread baking than cooking. I love it, I can't get enough of it. I hope/plan to sell my bread someday soon but I really want it to remain fun so I'm being wishy washy about it.
My passion is what i do for a living, I'm a beauty therapist and i love doing my job, its a great feeling when a client walks into the shop all stressed and unhappy and after only an hour or so they leave a different person, more relaxed and in general happy, i guess that's why we are called therapist. The greatest part is during the school ball season (prom i think you call it)and being able to turn a girl into a princess for a night, it always gives me a sense of inner peace knowing I've just made somebody else happy just doing wot i love to do.
Music is my passion! I love going to live shows, getting to know the musicians and helping them out any way I can (whether it be providing a meal, a place to sleep, guarding equipment or selling merchandise). Music makes me happy so I love returning the favor through helping the bands any way I can. I'd make it a career if I could. Music is a great way to channel stress into a more creative outlet like drawing or writing, both are hobbies of mine (though don't ask me to draw you anything... I'm not any good haha).
My passion is drawing/sketching and definitely reading. Both are totally relaxing, and I can let my imagination run wild during both (what I'm terribly good at I'm afraid).
I also like to roleplay (which is just like writing a book with other people) in my spare time as well.
My passion would definately have to be reading, but lately ive started writing as well, just short stories on my facebook page (i dont if anyone reads them, or likes them) but its fun when i am in a creative mood. Its interesting to see where i can take the story. My other passion is coffee. love it, work in a coffee shop, love mixing it with other things to see what they taste like... also cant go through the day without one, but that could be called addiction, who knows lol.
I bought the newest book in the soul screamers series without realising there were a few before it, so I would love a copy of My Soul to take (doesnt matter which country its supposd to be from) and also your other series, Shifters, looks awesome! so (if i win) and you run out of the others, id love to give them a whirl. :-)
And keep going with the brilliant work :-D
I have too many passions. I love art, I love making jewelry. I love reading and talking about books. I love writing. I love origami. I love kicking back and having a few drinks with friends. Basically, anything that makes me feel free, but I hardly ever feel free. :(
Ok, my passion is reading and writing; I read to relax and my dream job is to be an author, though I know I'd end up like yourself and getting frustrated with it. I currently work as a Librarian so I'm somewhat close to working with my passion (and there are days when I want to just hide under my desk and never come out)
Reading is my passion for sure. Its what I do to relax after a long day with my kids. My job is a stay at home mom and I wouldn't trade that at all but some days are rough with a 4 year old and a 2 1/2 year old. My dream job is to be a librarian, I'm planning to go back to college after my kids are in school :)
jlhsperry624@hotmail.com
I read to relax. Even if its only 20 mins a day before I go to sleep, it makes all the difference.

Hey Rachel, Im glad that you have found a happy medium and I certainly like the way in which you are dealing with your passion- spurt of one hr sesions !! it seems to work hey !

Id love Kiss me deadly as I have all your others ;) Thanks !
My passion is bowling actually, I've been doing it since 4-5 years old and the first thing I bought when I turned 18 and started getting ssi checks was my own set of gear, I try to bowl every week if I can if not twice a week. (I'd bowl daily if it was possible!)
My passion...reading..
and i've been wanting to read your books !
In my free time, I love to read on my Nook, or go horseback riding, but my favorite thing to do is spend time with my 2yr old daughter, she is my passion. :)
I try to find my free time with friends and family, read a book and disappear from reality during school. My passion is to help people who deal with life-threating conditions, be a voice for them and say this "Dont let this condition slow you down or define you, you make it to what you are and who you want to be." My passion is to get this dream moving forward, and also writing my stories that i've started and want to pursude a small career with these stories because We all have a story to tell.
When I want to relax I read and read a lot. This weekend was very sressful and I found that taking my book and reading helps calm down and takes me to another reality. And while reading sometimes I find that the character is having just as bad a day as mine. Would I like to do it for a living? Yes I would, I've actually been thinking lately about finding a job that would allow me to read all say long, it would be awesome.
I think my comment didn't post before so I'll do it again...
first!! so glad you're enjoying your -insert envy stare- JOB!! AGAIN!! even when you didn't even realize you weren't enjoying it anymore!
and well my passions yeap...2...are reading and taking pictures!! I don't think I go anyday without doing 1 of both....so if I EVER get the chance to do a living from them it'd be my wish come true!!
I love reading especially SFF & historical or paranormal romance. Some of my friends tell me it's pure escapism "how can u like something so impossible or unreal". That's the whole point right?
I also work out at the gym everyday & it's a great way to get rid of tension & frustration.
Being reincarnated as a librarian would be nice!
My current passion is mobius scarfs. I crochet. Last year I made felted handbags by the armful. This year it is mobius scarfs.
Hi Rachel, I am a Stay At Home Mom of 2 kids. A boy and a Girl. I love scrapbooking but have not really had time since I had my children because it is time consuming and of course, they always want to help!! I enjoy drawing, which also dont happen to often. I have always loved reading even as a young child. I will stay up until 6 AM just to finish a book. My husband thinks Im crazy. In my youngers years this would also get me in trouble with my parents because I was suppose to be sleeping for school. My mom bought me the Fearless Series(Francine Pascal 30 some books) I am just now at 23 giving them to the town library. I love reading and it gives me enjoyment and relaxing time even as a mom. If I could read books everday for a living I would in a heartbeat, but since I can't I will be going to school to finish my LPN Degree.I would love to win the Kiss me Deadly.
I would have to say my passion is photography. Unfortunately I have let life get in the way of doing it as much as I used to and need to get back to it. I loved a day of work, even a sunrise to sunset one, when I was photographing someone or some event.
Not exactly what most people took out of it but igh five for watching Firefly. Easily one of the best shows ever made, the fact that you are watching it has certainlymade my day better. Oh and good luck with your new writing system, as I am trying to be a published writer at the moment it is very interesting to hear about this sort of thing
My passion is really to read. I can't go one day without reading. It feels like my day is not complete or I can't go to sleep. If I could read for a living, I would be one happy girl.
I want to sound totally original here, but like the majority of people my passions include reading and writing. Both of them are my escape and pleasure. Sure, I'm striving to one day be published, but I like it when people think my work's professional. I get satisfactory high when people compliment my work. Even school work. Because I know all my hours of slaving away aren't done for just nothing :D
I read. I realise alot of people are going to say this. Why is it my passion? It takes me away. I can be anywhere in the world at anytime. Life couldn't be any better than that!!!
Reading is my passion. I when I can buy as many books as I can afford (and sometimes cannot afford). I buy all my favorite authors and read read read and read some more. Also a bit related, I sometimes try to write, though never finish anything.... so it is more hacking on the computer.
I'd like to be a translator, I'd love it if it were books, but I guess I'll stick to specialized, technic translation, from English to French.
And to relax, I think my thing is surfing the web or reading -- of course!
Wow - you write 3,000 words a day?? I think that is huge!!
No wonder you got burn out :( We need you to take care of yourself because just like everyone else on here my passion is reading (books are my air) and I write too, but I'm pleased if I can manage 1,000 words a day. And (as if this were an Oscar speech) I have to mention my kids too, they are awesome.
I would love to give up work and write full time, but I appreciate that may never happen.
So I need you to take some time out, maybe think about a having a holiday (I'm in the UK so yes I mean holiday not a vacation lol) and keep writing as you all inspire me to carry on.
My passion would be to be a writer, though right now it's being a reviewer/blogger and avid book reader.
I know the kind of demands that writing takes up - even for those not yet published or on deadlines - you have to spend almost your entire life in your head.
And since I can't make that sacrifice at this point, I'm happy to spend my time reading and enjoying what others have created.
fiktshun[at]gmail[dot]com
I've been an avid reader since I was a very little child and when I discovered that I had to wait for my fav books to be translated I decided I wanted to become a translator. I love languages and I have an insane passion for English. I graduated in Translation but getting a job in the publishing industry here in Italy is like wanting to go to the moon. Except that the moon might be easier to reach. So I started proposing my sample translation of books I love and that have not yet been optioned in Italy to publishers. It's hard to be even considered but there are great books out there and I really believe in them. So I read and translate, that's my passion. I love being able to get in touch with authors, read their work and get them to another audience in another country. So yeah, that's where I'm trying to go with my life!
My passion? That would be reading... I'm an avid reader almost since I've learned to read. Sometimes I wish that someone paid me to do it, but that would make reading my work, and it might be hard to separate reading as work and reading as a passion.
Good for you!! It is all about balance - something unfortunately I found out the hard way.
My dream job would be writing but I just don't think that will happen. So my next dream job would be to get paid to do what I love which is read. I don't just read, I devour books. Almost a year ago now I was put put in a situation where I am able to do nothing but read at the present time. Talk about making up for lost time, I am currently averaging about a book a day - to be able to earn money doing this would be so cool not to mention handy.
I would love any of the Australian, UK or US books.

Yola Rachel! So I would say my passion is reading! There's nothing better than sitting down to a great book after a long day. I would definitely put it over the TV or computer most days. (Maybe I should say that my passion is reading your Pride books, b/c they were amazing!!!!)
Hey Rachel, I know I I sound repetitive, almost everyone that has commented so far has said their passion is reading. while yes I do enjoy reading (Big Worm extraordinaire here!) the most fun and relaxing time I have ever had is when I am playing with my kids, I have a 7 year old and a 4 year old, both girls. I am a Stay at home mom at the moment until my youngest starts school full time, but when I get back into the work force I would love to work in the medical field. I worked at a hospital before I had children and really enjoyed it, I love patient involvement.
Great advice Rachel!
I love to read and write. Writing is a new passion of mine that I've only been exploring for 5 months. I've discovered how much time it takes up and how much stress it causes me, and thats with me not even doing it as my job. I have a lot to learn and I think once I learn more, I would love to do it for a living. But for now, I am enjoying escaping to my own little world on my own terms. Well, the characters terms ;)
I want all of 'em :D
At one time, computers and programing were my passion... but these days I think I hate them... all I want to do is write stories :( Now, it's pretty hard for me to write 4000 words per day "consistently"... so I thought I should write screenplays instead... (approx 35000 words).
i like to read, exercise, and make to-do lists.
I promise I'm not just copying everyone else when i say thing but i love reading too! once exams are out of the way and i have two months off where i can just do nothing, i spend most of days with my face in a book!
I'd love to win a copy of Pride!

p.s Can I just say, you don't know how excited i am for your adult series 'blood bound' to come out! Can't waittt :)
Its actually funny you ask that.... just the other day i was having a career crisis. For years now, I've known what i want to do for a living: I wanted to be a nurse. I have seen an open heart surgery and a c-section, and i just love the hospital environment. But now i really want to do something with psychology. So i dont know where i'm going from here. Maybe get into nursing and later into psych..
My passion and what i do to relax are virtually the same thing: read! i just love it! I really like getting lost in a good book :) I do write sometimes, just for my self, but its mostly always reading.
Hello Rachel, My passion is definitely Reading. I can not stop and actually relax when I can sit back and read a good book. I would love to do this and get paid for it. I also enjoy writing reviews on the books I read. But I would not want to quit my day job to be a book critict because if you were to look at my reviews, you will notice my reviews are mostly 5 star and never under 4 star. ( what can I say. I love my books and if I did not care for it, I dont review it~ If you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all) So, yea I wouldn't make a great critic but if your book is on my list... then it was definitely enjoyed: ) I also enjoy working with children and enjoying taking part in games and activities of children's b-day parties. I am studying to be an elementary teacher and can't wait to graduate and be able to enjoy that passion!! Thanks for sharing Rachel!
Rachel,
My passions are reading and writing, the latter inspired and encouraged by Vicki P.
Your post was very informative.
Thank you!
I hope this process continues to work out for you.
Cooking and reading. The cooking is relatively new and makes me feel all domestic-like. : )
My passion is most definitely reading. I love to sit outside somewhere and read while enjoying the fresh air and beautiful scenery (because sometimes you just have to give your eyes a break). I get lost in books. They draw me to someplace magical and are hard to put down until finished. Of course when I am done, then I feel like a part of me is missing and I just want to keep reading. My dream job would be to work as an editor or a literary agent. I would settle for working in a bookstore or library though if I was never able to get my dream job. I hope to have a large library in my house some day (but I guess I should find a job that will provide enough money to buy it).
I feel like I'm not alone here when I say I have a passion for reading ;) (and really, who else but bookaholics follow a writer's blog?) I'd love just reading books for a living, but seeing as I'm almost finished with medical school, I think I'll stick with that.
When I really need to relax, I turn the music on my computer up and dance and/or sing along. If I'm alone that is. If the bf's home, I get hugs from him :)
Hiya Rachel! My passion? Gee...I don't know if I really consider myself passionate about something. Sure, I enjoy things and have fave pastimes, but passion? I do enjoy reading whenever I have the time, which isn't a lot. Mostly after a long day at work I vege out and watch TV. But reading, like everyone else says is a fave pastime for me as well.
I also enjoy taking a nice walk--if the weather isn't too unbearable!
sstewart2505[at]yahoo[dot[com
like so many others here my passion is reading... love escaping into another place, time, etc for a few hrs each day...
I know what art burnout is like, too. I attended art and design school and by the end of the project I was hard pressed to find any thing I liked about the project anymore. I'm so happy you found something that works for you.
I don't kow that I'm really passionate about something. But if I had to pick something, it would either be reading, or watching movies/tv.
I love reading. My goodreads TBR pile has almost 1200 books in it. Plus, I probably add at least a couple more to it a day. Wish I had plenty of time to read them all.
Then, when I'm not reading, I love to watch movies or tv. There's a few shows that I'm addicted to, such as, Castle, Grey's Anatomy, CSI, The Vampire Diaries, NCIS, etc. (I watch way much tv!) I've been watching all of those shows since they started.
And, movies.... I love to watch almost anything. I even sometimes will go to the movie theater by myself if something new comes out that I want to see, and I can't find someone to go with me. (I think I might do that with Priest next week. I think it looks cool.)
I would definitely do any of those things for a job if I could. It would be way awesome.

Hi, hope your weather is a lot warmer than mine at the moment... I used to enjoy reading, one book at a time, when I had spare time or when a new book was released. After awhile, when I had finished a really good book and waiting on the next one to be released, I found myself creating my own stories, to fill in the time. Creating my own worlds to escape in. My stories are not finished they continue to grow & grow - work in progress! I have five different stories to keep my creative juices flowing.
Having a family,a home based business, I would always place them first, which included my son's after school sport - Football AFL. I became my son's footy team Team Manager. I had to be in control & avoid myself. Looking after two Jnr teams, I have retired after 3 years on the job. Retired being basketball coach as well. I have since found out, why I placed everything else before myself, as those haunting faded memories of a past long, long ago had started to re appear. My reading had taken over, it had became my escape, from those bad memories.
- So my passion is to keep moving forward, to grow, look after my family and our construction business with my husband, but most of all remembering myself. Take time out to read and to write at my own pace and to heal. One day all going well, see if a publisher might enjoy my stories as much as I have had creating them.
My passion is motorsports. Ya, I know it the complete opposite of my love of books. Reading is the yin to my motorsports yang.
I have an office/desk job that pays my bills, and allows me to travel with a racing team doing sponsor relations. I get to travel for race weekends and do what I love. It's a lot of sacrifice and a LOT of work, but I wouldn't give it up for the world.
Hi Rachel,
Helping others is my passion, I love training and teaching others. To relax, I enjoy reading. I use it as an escape from my reality. I would love to be a personal trainer / nutritionist for a living, I have suffered dlmuxh in my weight loss journey I'd love to pay it forward and help someone else !
Hey Rachel, I actually have two passions. My first is reading, I love to read in my free time. My second is photography. I love taking nature walks or going to the beach and I always bring my camera and a book with me! I think I would personally enjoy being a photographer more because I don't think its as time consuming (think being the key word)and I could travel all over the world. I'm actually planning on being a nurse, and I'll leave my passions for my free time!
my passion is singing. I have always loved it and whenever I sing or listen to other's sing i feel goose bumps. My life would be dead without music. I read for relaxation and I would love to write for a living but unfortunately that is a very hard industry to get in to.
Reading, horseback riding and running are my passions and the last two are huge stress relievers, too.
If I could do whatever I want, since this is all pie in the sky, I'd have to be rich, because I'd love to support small, struggling no-kill animal shelters.
Firefly is awesome. You'll have to check out the movie, Serenity, when you're done with the series.
Yes, I would have to say my passion is reading and if I even knew where to begin I would love to be a book editor. I love your new way to write! Very inspirational! :)
Sometimes a different or new approach gives you a fresh burst.
Glad to see it worked out for you.
marypres@gmail.com
wow...I would say reading is my passion but it looks like everyone said that so I'm going to say writing is my passion and I hope to be either a forensic scientist or a best-selling author. :)
I like reading about your progress as a writer. One question were you working outside the home when you started your mad writing frenzy?
Hi! My passion in life is being a Mom. I've always wanted to be a Mom and when God blessed us with the most amazing little boy ever we were and still are head over heels!! I'd love to make a living doing just that, but we like all our bills to be paid and have things like food in the house so I work outside the home. I'm a Dental Assistant, have been for 11 years. I really do love it, I don't wake up hating it everyday. Just some days! But to relax I read, read, read. My whole family understands my love of reading to the point that my son won't allow anyone to touch my books. "Don't touch my Mom's books, she'll pop your head off!" My dream job would be a writer of YA. My husband supports/pushes me to keep writing. He loves my stories. It would be awesome to be published! Something I'd consider if I became suddenly independently wealthy and could devote all my time to it!

Love the post - I too just discovered Firefly - I watched the movie Serenity first and my son told me I should have watched the season before the movie - didn't know there was a season...hence the newly discovered Firefly.
My passion is reading. I always thought it would be amazing to do it for a living, but recently I have discovered deadlines and MUST reads. These two things have changed my mind about reading for a living. I am already looking forward to a smaller stack of 'Need to review by...' books so that I can read something that I "WANT" to read. I do have those books that I have preordered that arrive as my "Drop EVERYTHING and read" books. I have always imagined be a writer, but long ago come to the conclusion that I am consumer, not a producer. Thanks for hosting - I hope I win. I have a slowly growing collection of foreign favorites (my current favorite is a copy of The Hobbit from Russia!).

Hey Rachel! I like cooking! I'm not an expert in the slightest, but I like to cook new and different things. Especially trying out new and interesting desserts!
stewart[dot]carrie94[at]yahoo[dot]com
Rachel, I'm glad that you found a way to relieve the stress of working too much. That's really awesome! It's purely selfish because I don't know what I would do if I didn't have your books to read! ;-)
My passion is baking. Cupcakes and bread mostly. Pretty much anytime in the kitchen is when I get relaxed. It's where I am most comfortable. I can drown out anything that happened at work and just get to it. I know what I have in mind and it's easy to do. If I could, I would open up a little cafe/bakery shop where I live. Unless I become a mom....then it would be a different story ;-).
Hi Rachel,I have two passions, and I find that both of them help me to relax. The first is reading. I'm 17 years old and majority of what I read is fiction, especially the paranormal romance kind. My other passion is listening to music. I like to sing along with every song I listen to,and I find that very calming. I would love to read books for a living and maybe review and blog about them.
I'd love to win a copy of the Australian version of My Soul To Steal! Thanks for doing a giveaway!

My passion is reading. If I could I would do it as my job and on my free time.
Hi! My passion is reading romance and YA. Is usually relax by reading or catching up on my TV shows. I would like to become a book agent someday.
Are you ready for the most cliche answer EVER? Alright, here goes.
Reading. I'm sure like 88 of the 89 comments here have already chosen this but it's 100% true. I'm a book blogger, I force my friends to read my favourite books and I honestly don't know what I would do without my time if I couldn't read.
I've thought of being a librarian but ultimately, I'm thinking that psychology is a better path for me.
I would go for the Kiss Me Deadly anthology :) Thanks so much!

If I could make a career out of reading, trust me I would.

I am so glad you have found a way to keep the joy in what you do. I love your stories and appreciate the effort you put in. Personally, I read and paint to "get away from it all" All the best to you.
Hi Rachel :)
My passion. TVXQ! It's a boy band X)
Haha I like reading but sadly it did not because a crazily huge passion, more of like I enjoy it but I really don't read may books because I take a long time to finish a book, like at least a month? I read for a while then i'll stop to think about it, digest? And really really think about it. Then start to do research, then find out more about certain ideas and issues mentioned in the book. So by the time I finish a book, the sixth book or somewhere near there will most probably be published already XS
Hope i'm not sharing too much >< Mine seems like a long comment. It feels great to be telling you my life after reading your posts haha. And give me a book please! :D I see some attractive titles haha! Thank you :)

I'm glad the new method is working, because I absolutely LOVE your books and I'm super excited for your new adult series!
In case you haven't already guessed, my passion is reading. :D
there's nothing better than reading. books are my life and nothing can (and ever will) change that.something that i do when i relax? a good milkshake and a super comfortable bed might work for me. i just lie on the bed and tune in to what my mom calls motivational and inspiring songs that usually rise my spirit and make my mind think positively.if that does not work, i curl up in bed, wishing the day as one of the rainy days, and just read for hours..... other than that, i'm good to do everything....
I have a lot of passions, but the main one would be kids or working with kids... Reading is what I do to relax, I am an avid reader but being a mum of a three year old boy and also being a university student, I hardly have time to relax. Would I love to make a career out of my passion of being with kids, yes. As a child I remember school holidays as being one of my favourite times so when my son (when he finally goes to school) has school holidays I would love to stay home with him or do things with him instead of working so to make things perfect I'd love to be a school teacher although what I am studying isn't a teaching degree (It's a Bachelor of Medical Science), I'd love to do Masters of teaching next year to fufil my dream. Alicia McCartney.
I try to have passion in everything i do in life. Reading is definitely my ultimate passion. There is nothing better than sitting on the beach, wind in my hair and a book in my hand. But my newest passion is skydiving. I LOVE IT. I've always told my parents that one day I would have wings, and now... i do.
My passon is singing.... And read books.... i need to have a book to read, my husband it really thinking in some AA but for my reading... Jajajaja. I think, that when I read, I libe someten life, someone story, and help to be in love, have teme problems or not... Have a different adult problems at list.
You are a REALLY talented writter, And I love your book. i hope some Day your books will be traslade to spanish.
I want to be a writer when I grow up (that expression sounds so funny, now that it's only a matter of years away).
Reading is my relaxation and my passion.
Hi Rachel,
I just read your Shifter series last week, in 3 days! I was completely hooked! My passion is research, I'm a history major, and nothing beats the high you get when you find a piece of information that you've been searching incessantly for!
To relax I got to hot yoga, it's one of the only ways I can completely forget about the stress of school, work and my personal life, afterwards I'm completely exhausted (in the best way) and I can go home, shower and crawl into my comfy bed with a good book (now usually one of yours) and a cup of tea.
My passion is design :) And just like being a writer, being a designer is something you can't do from 9 'till 5, you're a designer 24/7. If you're a good one that is... ;)
Luckily for me there are hard-working writers like yourself who'll do their best to write several awesome books a year, so frustrated designers can take a break every now and then :) Thanks!
